Throughout the Allerton III Conference, several consistent research needs were identified across scientific disciplines. First, additional basic research is needed to identify genomic mechanisms and novel genes/proteins in a variety of tissues under different conditions. Second, expansion of the infrastructure of the scientific community is needed. This can best be accomplished by additional competitive grants programs for training grants, program project grants, and multidisciplinary research projects. Third, the need for improved tools for animal bioinformatics was emphasized. Fourth, competitive grants programs for extension/outreach efforts and application of genomic technologies to production systems are needed. Finally, efforts to publicize and document the benefits of animal genomics for improved human health and animal production systems to members of Congress and the general public should be enhanced.

Background: The Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition (CPPD) subgroup of the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) Ultrasound working group was established to validate ultrasound as an outcome measure instrument for CPPD, and in 2017 has developed and validated standardised definitions for elementary lesions for the detection of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in joints. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the reliability of a consensus-based ultrasound scoring system for CPPD extent, representing the next phase in the OMERACT methodology.
Methods: In this study the novel scoring system for CPPD was developed through a stepwise process, following an established OMERACT ultrasound methodology.

The improved understanding of the molecular basis of innate immunity have led to the identification of type I interferons (IFNs), particularly IFN-α, as central mediators in the pathogenesis of several Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis, inflammatory myositis and Sjögren's syndrome. Here, we review the main data regarding the opportunity to target type I IFNs for the treatment of IMIDs. Type I IFNs and their downstream pathways can be targeted pharmacologically in several manners.
