A sulfobutyl ether-beta-cyclodextrin-assisted electrokinetic chromatographic method was developed to rapidly resolve and detect the cyclic nitramine explosives 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaaza-isowurtzitane (CL-20), octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and their related degradation intermediates in environmental samples. Development of the electrophoretic method required the measurement of the aqueous solubility of CL-20 which was determined to be 3.59 +/- 0.74 mg/l at 25 degrees C (95% confidence interval, n=3). The performance of the method was then compared to results obtained from existing high-performance liquid chromatography methods including US Environmental Protection Agency method 8330.

This work offers a novel approach and sensor electrode for electrocatalytic reduction of nitro-aromatic explosives (NAEs). This sensor was created by combining electrochemically reduced graphene nanosheets (GNSs) -through cyclic voltammetric reduction of a graphene oxide colloidal solution- with phosphate-stabilized poly-caffeic acid (pCAF) film-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The poly-caffeic acid-modified nonconductive electrode was stabilized with a HPO/HPO phosphate buffer at pH 7 and made conductive.

Since peroxide-based explosives (PBEs) lack reactive functional groups, they cannot be determined directly by most detection methods and are often detected indirectly by converting them to HO. However, HO may originate from many sources, causing false positives in PBE detection. Here, we developed a novel electrochemical sensor for the direct sensitive and selective determination of PBEs such as triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) using electrochemical modification of the glassy carbon (GC) electrode with PBE-memory polycarbazole (PCz) films decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by cyclic voltammetry (CV).

The quantification of bond strengths is a useful and general concept in chemistry. In this work, a Coulombic force model based on atomic electric charges computed using the accurate distributed multipole analysis (DMA) partition of the molecular charge density was employed to quantify the weakest N-NO and C-NO bond strengths of 19 nitrobenzene, 11 nitroazole, and 10 nitramine molecules. These bonds are known as trigger linkages because they are usually related to the initiation of an explosive.
