As part of our investigations into novel dual action topical anti-arthritis systems, the permeation of ibuprofen or ketoprofen plus eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were determined from a fish oil vehicle across pig ear skin in vitro. The steady state fluxes of ibuprofen and ketoprofen were 9.17+/-1.98 microgram cm(-2)h(-1) and 6.12+/-2.39 microgram cm(-2)h(-1), respectively. At 24h, 5.7 microgram cm(-2) EPA and 3.1 microgram cm(-2) DHA permeated when the solute was ibuprofen; 1.4 microgram cm(-2) EPA and 1.0 microgram cm(-2) DHA when ketoprofen was the solute. At 12h, the ketoprofen/ibuprofen ratio of the moles permeated was 0.27, the ratio of EPA permeated simultaneously with ketoprofen and ibuprofen was 0.22 and the ratio of DHA permeated simultaneously with ketoprofen and ibuprofen was 0.24. We believe this is the first time that simultaneous permeation across skin of a solute and its vehicle has been determined purposefully. The data successfully demonstrated that simultaneous permeation of NSAIDs and essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA from a formulation containing fish oil is feasible. In addition, for both NSAIDs, the relative rates of permeation of EPA and DHA, were in proportion to their levels in the fish oil and the permeation rate of either fatty acid was higher when the permeation rate of the solute was greater. This suggested that the greater the rate of permeation of the NSAID, the greater the rate of permeation of the vehicle, and that a solute permeates skin complete with its vehicular solvation cage. This apparent relationship between solute and vehicle fluxes may be of more widespread significance to skin permeation experimentation.

A comprehensive aqueous phase spectrophotometric study concerning the trace level determination of iridium (III) by its reaction with benzopyran-derived chromogenic reagent, 6-chloro-3-hydroxy-7-methyl-2-(2'-thienyl)-4-oxo-41-benzopyran (CHMTB), is performed. The complexing reagent instantly forms a yellow complex with Ir (III) at pH 4.63, where metal is bound to the ligand in a ratio of 1:2 as deduced by Job's continuous variations, mole ratio, and equilibrium shift methods.

Introduction: Osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome (OPPG) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by severe osteoporosis and eye abnormalities that leads to vision loss. In this study, we report the outcome of a short period of treatment with teriparatide in one patient with OPPG.
Case Presentation: The patient was a 17-year-old girl who suffered a bone fracture at the age of two and was diagnosed with OPPG at the age of three.

Developing a facile mechanism for transporting nanoparticles across the whole skin by overcoming the stratum corneum is a challenging task. Herein, a stimuli-responsive and noninvasive transport of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been reported through the fabrication of AuNP-incorporated soybean oil-based oleogels (AuG) using stearic acid as a gelator. A series of AuG was formulated by incorporating different proportions of AuNPs and a fixed amount of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (drug) to establish that the composition with the highest concentration of AuNP (d-AuG4) was associated with the best iontophoretic response, validated via the corresponding in vitro drug release under AC field-induced iontophoresis.

Objectives: To assess combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) use and adolescent women's peak areal bone mineral density (BMD) accrual.
Methods: We enrolled 527 randomly selected women across Canada (2004-6) divided by age into adolescents (16-19) and young adults (20-24) and by CHC use to ever (E-CHC)/never (N-CHC) users. At baseline and year 2 we measured height, weight, and BMD at lumbar spine (L1-4), femoral neck, and total hip sites.

Long term encapsulation combined with spatiotemporal release for a precisely defined quantity of small hydrophilic molecules on demand remains a challenge in various fields ranging from medical drug delivery, controlled release of catalysts to industrial anti-corrosion systems. Free-standing individually sealed polylactic acid (PLA) nano- and microchamber arrays were produced by one-step dip-coating a PDMS stamp into PLA solution for 5 s followed by drying under ambient conditions. The wall thickness of these hydrophobic nano-microchambers is tunable from 150 nm to 7 μm by varying the PLA solution concentration.
