Published: April 2003

Introduction: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the precision of a portable whole blood coagulometer (CoaguChek S) in the hands of self-managing patients on oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT).

Materials And Methods: Fifteen patients on self-managed OAT performed measurements of INR by two types of portable whole blood coagulometers (CoaguChek and CoaguChek S) at home for 10 weeks.

Results: The coefficient of variation (CV) of INRs determined at home by CoaguChek S by patients on self-managed OAT was 5.5% (95% confidence limits: 4.9%, 6.1%). The biological CV of INR within and between patients was 15.0% and 14.7%, respectively.

Conclusion: The precision of CoaguChek S is satisfactory.

Impact of Lupus Anticoagulant on INR Using Recombinant Prothrombin Time Reagent.

BACKGROUND Lupus anticoagulants (LA) can interfere with routine coagulation tests such as the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prothrombin time (PT). The international normalized ratio (INR) is derived from PT and is used to monitor warfarin therapy. A positive LA result is one of the laboratory criteria of the 2023 ACR/EULAR antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) classification criteria.

Coagulation in familial hypercholesterolemic patients: effect of current hypolipidemic treatment and anticoagulants.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a relatively rare genetic disease associated with high serum cholesterol levels but also with abnormalities in blood coagulation. Novel pharmacotherapeutic approaches in FH including proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 antibodies (PCSK9Ab) are very efficient in decreasing cholesterol levels but their impact on coagulation in FH is not yet established. Therefore, we hypothesized that these novel antidyslipidemic drugs can positively impact blood coagulation due to their more potent effect on cholesterol.

Detection of enoxaparin and argatroban by use of the novel viscoelastic coagulometer ClotPro.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates point-of-care diagnostic tests for monitoring the anticoagulants enoxaparin and argatroban in critically ill patients who face risks of thrombosis and bleeding.
  • Blood samples from twelve healthy volunteers were used to evaluate the performance of the ClotPro viscoelastic coagulometer alongside traditional coagulation tests.
  • Results indicated that the RVV test for enoxaparin is not reliable, while the ECA test shows strong correlation and may be a better option for accurately detecting argatroban levels.

Context.—: Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) are coagulative screening tests used for the diagnosis of several pathologic conditions, such as liver failure, coagulation factor deficiencies, anti-phospholipid antibodies (lupus anticoagulant), and factor VIII inhibitors. A new test was developed several years ago to detect the amount of thrombin generated during plasma clotting, using low tissue factor concentrations and fluorogenic substrates, and it has since been used successfully in conditions ranging from hypocoagulable to hypercoagulable states.
