PRODH Regulates Tamoxifen Resistance through Ferroptosis in Breast Cancer Cells.

Genes (Basel)

October 2024

The Department of Biochemistry, Medicine School, Yichun University, Yichun 336000, China.

Background: Estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer accounts for around 70% of all cases. Tamoxifen, an anti-estrogenic inhibitor, is the primary drug used for this type of breast cancer treatment. However, tamoxifen resistance is a major challenge in clinics.

Unravelling the role of proline in glyphosate-mediated toxicity - tolerance mechanism or stress signal?

Physiol Plant

September 2024

GreenUPorto - Sustainable Agrifood Production Research Centre & Inov4Agro, Biology Department, Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto, Porto, Portugal.

Glyphosate (GLY), the most widely used herbicide, has been regarded as an emergent environmental contaminant due to its constant and cumulative use, with potential harm to non-target organisms, such as crops, disrupting cells' redox balance. Therefore, plants need to fine-tune their antioxidant (AOX) mechanisms to thrive under GLY-contaminated environments. Proline overaccumulation is a common response in plants exposed to GLY, yet its role in GLY-induced toxicity remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • The common carp is a key species in Chinese aquaculture due to its adaptability and nutritional value, but the specific molecular mechanisms behind its nutritional deposition are not well understood.
  • A study analyzed the nutritional content and gene expression in the liver and muscle of three carp varieties, finding that FFRC carp had higher fat and polyunsaturated fatty acid levels, while Huanghe carp had more flavor and essential amino acids.
  • These differences were linked to changes in gene expression related to fatty acid transport and amino acid metabolism, providing insights for optimizing nutritional quality in carp.

Background: Proline dehydrogenase () encodes a mitochondrial protein that catalyzes the first step of proline degradation and is related to angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is a critical process in the development and progression of tumors, including lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), as tumor growth and metastasis are dependent on angiogenesis. The mitochondria and their associated genes thus play a vital role in tumor therapy.

Application of Silicon Influencing Grain Yield and Some Grain Quality Features in Thai Fragrant Rice.

Plants (Basel)

May 2024

Plant Genetic Resource and Nutrition Lab (CMUPNLab), Division of Agronomy, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand.

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial nutrient that has been shown to increase rice productivity and grain quality. Fragrant rice occupies the high end of the rice market with prices at twice to more than three times those of non-fragrant rice. Thus, this study evaluated the effects of increasing Si on the yield and quality of fragrant rice.
