Published: October 2003

Beta-sitosteryl-D-glucoside and oleuropein isolated from the olive tree (Olea europaea) and their hydrolysed derivatives were tested by a feeding stimulative activity bioassay using the olive weevil (Dyscerus perforatus). Although the steroidal glucoside showed potent feeding stimulative activity, the activity of the aglycone (beta-sitosterol) was significantly lower than that of the glucoside. On the other hand, the difference in the activity between oleuropein, a secoiridoid glucoside, and the hydrolysed derivatives was not significant.

Unlabelled: How tick-borne pathogens interact with their hosts has been primarily studied in vertebrates where disease is observed. Comparatively less is known about pathogen interactions within the tick. Here, we report that ticks infected with either (causative agent of anaplasmosis) or (causative agent of Lyme disease) show activation of the ATF6 branch of the unfolded protein response (UPR).

Background: Some adults with intellectual disabilities do not acquire oral feeding skills and are dependent on gastrostomy tube supplementation.

Methods: Two adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities received intervention for oral consumption during daily meals (standardised food and liquid quantities, individualised procedural guidelines, and consumption-contingent consequences) while the frequency and amount of gastrostomy tube feedings were gradually decreased and eliminated.

Results: Compared to baseline (pre-intervention) conditions, the adults increased oral consumption of food and liquid during the intervention and gastrostomy tube supplementation was eliminated.

This study investigated the probiotic potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from the intestines of quails during the late egg-laying period. Eight LAB strains were examined for their tolerance to acid and bile salts, antibiotic susceptibility, self-aggregation, hydrophobicity, and antibacterial activity. Among these, E.

Ghrelin, the endogenous ligand of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), promotes food intake, other feeding behaviours and stimulates growth hormone (GH) release from the pituitary. Growth hormone secretagogues (GHS), such as GHRP-6 and MK-0677, are synthetic GHSR ligands that activate orexigenic Neuropeptide Y neurons that co-express Agouti-Related Peptide (AgRP) in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus when administered systemically. Systemic GHRP-6 also stimulates GH release in humans and rats.
