Body mass underpins many ecological processes at the level of individuals, populations, and communities. Often estimated in arthropods from linear morphological traits such as body length or head width, these relationships can vary even between closely related taxa. Length-mass relationships of mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae are poorly known despite the importance of this family to disease and aquatic ecology.

Background: The size of and other late Devonian arthrodire placoderms has been a persistent problem in paleontology. The bony head and thoracic armor of these animals are typically the only elements preserved in the fossil record, with the rest of the body being lost during fossilization. Accurate length estimates of arthrodires are critical for reconstructing the paleobiology of these taxa and Devonian paleoecology more generally.

Despite nearly 200 years of scientific collecting and study, none of the extinct, bipedal, predatory, theropod dinosaurs have been reliably shown to exceed 12 m in length. Using digital 3D models of theropods with lengths spanning 80 cm to 12 m, their body masses were found to scale to the 3.5 power of body lengths.

Huxley's model of simple allometry provides a parsimonious scheme for examining scaling relationships in scientific research, resource management, and species conservation endeavors. Factors including biological error, analysis method, sample size, and overall data quality can undermine the reliability of a fit of Huxley's model. Customary amendments enhance the complexity of the power function-conveyed systematic term while keeping the usual normality-borne error structure.
