[Study of mucin layer of tear film in patients with pterygium].

Klin Oczna

II Kliniki Okulistyki Akademii Medycznej w Lublinie.

Published: August 2003

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the tears film, particularly mucin layer in patients with pterygium.

Material And Methods: We examined 31 patients with pterygium--14 women and 17 men. Pterygium in one eye was found in 19 patients, in both eyes in 12. The control group consisted of 43 persons--21 women and 22 men. In our study were evaluated: marginal tears film, tears film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer's test and mucus fern patterns.

Results: The results showed no statistically significant difference in Schirmer's test in both groups. Marginal tears film was incorrect in 65.12% of the eyes with pterygium and in 34.89% eyes of the control group. Tears film break-up time was reduced statistically significant, in patients with pterygium. Abnormal mucus fern patterns (type III and IV) was observed in 38.95% of the eyes with pterygium and in 13.94% of the eyes in the control group.

Conclusions: Disturbances of the tear film stability were found in the eyes with pterygium. The results of BUT and mucus fern patterns showed, that abnormalities of mucin layer to be responsible for these changes. Perhaps these observations will contribute to prevention of pterygium.

Objectives: To assess different tear film parameters in female patients with thyroid eye disease and diabetes using a single portable device.

Methods: The observational study was conducted at the College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from January 12 to April 28, 2022, and comprised women patients with thyroid eye disease in group A, women patients with diabetes in group B, and healthy controls in group C. The sample size was determined with a confidence level of 80% and a significance of 0.

Purpose: To evaluate levels of 3 tear-soluble neuropeptides in dry eye patients and to identify the correlations with clinical signs and symptoms.

Methods: A total of 16 dry eye patients and 12 healthy volunteers were enrolled. Dry eye disease (DED) diagnosis was based on the 2017 Report of the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society International Dry Eye Workshop (TFOS DEWS II).

Since abdominal adhesion are quite problematic in abdominal and pelvic surgery, the conventional HA/CMC film are commonly used as an anti-adhesive material. However, such types are difficult to be rolled and delivered through the port of laparoscopic surgical devices due to adherence to the laparoscopic port or other parts of the films. To create an anti-adhesion film with more favorable handling properties and anti-adhesive effect, we developed a novel punctate uneven gelatin film (PU GF).

Tear film lipid layer thickness and blink dynamics in patients with blepharospasm.

BMC Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: This study investigates the effect of botulinum toxin A on lipid layer thickness (LLT) and blink dynamics in patients with benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) compared to dry eye disease (DED) patients.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients with dry eye disease (DED) and BEB treated with botulinum toxin A (BoT A) injections. Data on demographics, lipid layer thickness (LLT), meiboscore, and blink dynamics measured using a LipiView II interferometer before and 2 months after BoT A were collected.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pterygium excision combined with autologous limbal stem cell transplantation on microvascular density, tear film stability, and corneal wound healing in the management of pterygium.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 317 patients with pterygium who underwent treatment between January 2021 and January 2024. Patients were divided into a control group (pterygium excision alone, n = 161) and a study group (pterygium excision combined with autologous limbal stem cell transplantation, n = 156) based on the surgical approach.
