Indications and recipient outcomes of adult left lobe living donor liver transplantation.

Updates Surg

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Surgery and Transplantation, Kumamoto University Graduate School of Medical Sciences, 1-1-1, Honjo, Chuo-Ku, Kumamoto, 860-8556, Japan.

Adult left lobe living donor liver transplantation has long been practiced nearly exclusively in Japan. To overcome the potential risks of small-for-size syndrome and hepatic venous outflow obstruction associated with the use of left lobe grafts, center-specific countermeasures such as splenectomy, meticulous hepatic venous reconstruction, and inclusion of the caudate lobe have been implemented, resulting in short- and long-term results comparable with those of right lobe graft in high-volume centers. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed these observations; however, the indications and techniques of adult left lobe living donor liver transplantation have yet to be standardized.

From smog to scarred hearts: unmasking the detrimental impact of air pollution on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Cell Mol Life Sci

January 2025

Cardiac Electrophysiology Research and Training Center, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, 50200, Thailand.

Air pollution is a global environmental health hazard associated with elevated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to various air pollutants, specifically particulate matter (PM), ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM), and diesel exhaust particles, may exacerbate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. PM exposure can directly impair cardiomyocyte survival under ischemic conditions by inducing inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and dysregulation of non-coding RNAs.

The hidden value of adult informal care (IC) refers to the unaccounted value of informal care in overall costs of long-term care (LTC) estimates. This paper estimates the net value of adult IC in Europe, drawing on a well-being-based methodology. We use an instrumental variable strategy and a longitudinal and cross-country dataset to estimate the causal effect of the extensive and intensive margin of caregiving on subjective well-being.
