G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are pivotal in cellular signalling and drug targeting. Herpesviruses encode GPCRs (vGPCRs) to manipulate cellular signalling, thereby regulating various aspects of the virus life cycle, such as viral spreading and immune evasion. vGPCRs mimic host chemokine receptors, often with broader signalling and high constitutive activity.

Article Synopsis
  • - Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is linked to various cancers, including nasopharyngeal and gastric carcinomas, as well as different types of lymphomas that can range from mild to severe illnesses.
  • - The review highlights skin-related disorders associated with EBV, such as EBV-positive mucocutaneous ulcer, lymphomatoid granulomatosis, and several lymphomas including diffuse large B cell lymphoma and plasmablastic lymphoma.
  • - Due to the rarity of these skin conditions, a multidisciplinary approach and referrals to specialized care centers are recommended for proper management and treatment.

Excess Mortality in Persons with Concurrent HIV and Cancer Diagnoses: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev

December 2024

Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Pleasanton, California.

Background: With extended lifespans for people with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH), there is a corresponding increased burden of chronic illnesses, including cancer. Our objective was to estimate the excess mortality among PWH with cancer compared with people without HIV (PWoH), accounting for the higher background mortality in the general PWH population.

Methods: We identified 39,000 PWH and 387,767 demographically matched PWoH in three integrated healthcare systems from 2000 to 2016.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the potential link between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and prostate cancer (PCa) using Mendelian randomization (MR) techniques.
  • Research combined data from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on PCa and serum anti-EBV antibodies to assess this relationship.
  • Findings suggest that higher levels of a specific EBV antibody may increase the risk of PCa, indicating a need for further research to understand how EBV could influence the development and progression of prostate cancer.

Steroid usage poses a risk of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), but high-dose corticosteroid treatment can lead to false-negative CD toxin test results. Moreover, CDI-induced nausea can complicate administration of oral antibiotics, which are typically the primary therapy for CDI. In the present case, a 43-year-old woman diagnosed with EBV-associated T-cell post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder developed CDI during treatment with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP).
