This review focuses on capillary electrophoretic separations performed on capillary electrophoresis chips (CE chips) with hydrodynamically closed separation systems in a context with transport processes (electroosmotic flow (EOF)) and hydrodynamic flow (HDF)) that may accompany the separations in these devices. It also reflects some relevant works dealing with conventional CE operating under such hydrodynamic conditions. The use of zone electrophoresis (ZE), isotachophoresis (ITP) and their on-line combination (ITP-ZE) on the single-column and column-coupling CE chips with the closed separation systems and related problems are key topics of the review. Some attention is paid to sample pretreatment in the separations performed on the CE chips. Here, mainly potentialities of the ITP-ZE combination in trace analysis applications of the miniaturized systems are discussed in a broader extent. Links between the ZE separation and detection provide a frame for the discussion of current status of the detection on the CE chips. Analytical applications illustrate potentialities of the CE chips operating with the closed separation systems (suppressed HDF and EOF) to the determination of small ions present in various matrices by ZE, ITP and ITP-ZE.

Traditional packed beds in chromatography suffer from increased band broadening due to the random nature of packing, leading non-ideal fluid flow and channeling. To address these challenges, pillar array columns have been developed, offering improved performance over random packing thanks to their homogenous fluid profiles. The study aims to i) evaluate fluid dynamics and chromatographic performance across different PAC morphologies, ii) establish the influence of column morphology on performance, and iii) assess the correlation between chromatographic performance and hydrodynamic parameters.

Hyperpolarized-C magnetic resonance imaging (HP-C MRI) was used to image changes in C-lactate signal during a visual stimulus condition in comparison to an eyes-closed control condition. Whole-brain C-pyruvate, C-lactate and C-bicarbonate production was imaged in healthy volunteers (N = 6, ages 24-33) for the two conditions using two separate hyperpolarized C-pyruvate injections. BOLD-fMRI scans were used to delineate regions of functional activation.

The European subtype of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV-Eur; species , family ) was the only tick-borne flavivirus present in central Europe known to cause neurologic disease in humans and several animal species. Here, we report a tick-borne flavivirus isolated from Alpine chamois () with encephalitis and attached ticks, present over a wide area in the Alps. Cases were detected in 2017 in Salzburg, Austria, and 2023 in Lombardy and Piedmont, Italy.
