This review gives a short overview of the main approaches to the derivatization of inorganic ions in capillary electrophoresis (CE) with emphasis on the most recent works. Various derivatization procedures and detection methods are discussed. A brief account of their advantages and limitations is given. More specific areas such as microchip CE, simultaneous separation of anions and cations, and speciation analysis are also briefly discussed.

Zileuton is the only FDA-approved 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) inhibitor for asthma treatment, but it produces hepatotoxicity associated with the benzothiophene fragment. Using the concept of organometallic derivatization pioneered by Jaouen and Brocard, we synthesized five new organometallic Zileuton derivatives, maintaining the urea fragment and incorporating ferrocenyl and ruthenocenyl moiety (-). Their biological activity was evaluated against 5-LOX, 15-LOX, COX-1, and COX-2 enzymes.

Various mass-spectrometric lipidomics approaches are described to resolve double bond (DB) positions, fatty acid attachments, and -position but require dedicated instrumentation or chemical derivatization. In this study, we demonstrate that dopant-assisted atmospheric-pressure photoionization (dAPPI) using chlorobenzene as a dopant generates radical cations (M) and [M-H] cations of acylglycerols termed Electron Deficient Precursor Ions (EDP). Observed [M-H] ions are derived from radical hydrogen abstraction from M ions.

Speciation methods provide a more detailed picture regarding human exposure to toxic metals/metalloids and their effects on human health. The toxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) differs considerably from inorganic mercury (iHg), such that their separation and quantification in whole blood is helpful in identifying sources and possible pathways of exposure. Liquid chromatography (LC) has several advantages over gas chromatography (GC) for the separation of iHg from MeHg due to the former's compatibility with uptake rates of common nebulizer systems used with ICP-MS and the latter's requirement for a derivatization step to produce gaseous Hg species for an effective separation.

Due to its toxicity, contamination with arsenic, a Group 1 carcinogen, is a significant environmental and public health issue. The toxicity of arsenic varies with its chemical form. For example, inorganic species like arsenite (AsO) and arsenate (AsO) are generally more toxic than organoarsenic compounds.

This study introduces a sustainable approach for enhancing the fire retardancy and smoke suppression of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites, contributing to addressing one of the major challenges in biocomposites that limits their application in various engineering fields, as automotive and construction sectors. Flax fibers (FF) were surface functionalized with a novel organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardant (FR), offering a sustainable bioinspired approach that mitigates potential mechanical properties impairment and FR leaching, which can cause environmental concerns and reduced composite durability. The process involves a three-step coating procedure.
