In order to understand self-organization in helicity-driven systems, we have investigated the dynamics of low-aspect-ratio toroidal plasmas by decreasing the external toroidal field and reversing its sign in time. Consequently, we have discovered that the helicity-driven toroidal plasma relaxes towards the flipped state. Surprisingly, it has been observed that not only toroidal flux but also poloidal flux reverses sign spontaneously during the relaxation process. The self-reversal of the magnetic fields is attributed to the nonlinear growth of the n=1 kink instability of the central open flux.

As the exploration and development of deep wells have emerged as a key option to extract more oil and gas resources trapped underneath, high-temperature formations impose stringent requirements on the thermal stability of plugging agents used in water-based drilling fluids. In this work, β-cyclodextrin, with its unique conical toroidal rigid stable structure and internal hydrophobic and external hydrophilic special adsorption capacity, was first grafted with maleic anhydride to prepare a silicone polymer and then copolymerized with dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) in the presence of coupling agent vinyltriethoxysilane (A151) and cross-linking divinylbenzene (DVD) to finally obtain a high-temperature resistant plugging agent (AMMD). Subsequently, the molecular structure was evidenced and the performance of AMMD was examined in the polysulfonate-base fluid via a series of tests including high-temperature high-pressure filtration loss, sand tray plugging, and drilling fluid displacement, and the results were compared with the counterpart Soltex under the same conditions.

Ku-band 300 kW high power ferrite phase shifter.

Rev Sci Instrum

September 2024

Key Laboratory of Advanced Science and Technology on High Power Microwave, Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology, Xi'an 710024, China.

Phase shifter (PS) is a key component of a phased array antenna (PAA) system, which controls the microwave phase and realizes the antenna beam forming and scanning. A ferrite PS (FPS) is a current-controlled PS that uses the ferrite's gyromagnetic properties to realize phase shifting. It has the advantages of short phase switching time, low microwave loss, and high reliability and, therefore, has been widely used in low-power PAA systems.

A toroidal-topology traveling-wave thermoacoustic electric generator (TWTEG) is developed. It consists of a traveling-wave thermoacoustic engine, two linear alternators connected in parallel, and sets of variable resistive-capacitive (R-C) external electric loads, in conjunction with accessories and instrumentation required for experimental investigations. The working medium is helium with a static absolute pressure that varies from 25 bars to 30 bars.

A birdcage resonant antenna for helicon wave generation in TORPEX.

Rev Sci Instrum

September 2024

École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Swiss Plasma Center (SPC), CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland.

A birdcage resonant helicon antenna is designed, mounted, and tested in the toroidal device TORPEX. The birdcage resonant antenna is an alternative to the usual Boswell or half-helical antenna designs commonly used for ∼10 cm diameter helicon sources in low temperature plasma devices. The main advantage of the birdcage antenna lies in its resonant nature, which makes it easily operational even at large scales, an appealing feature for the TORPEX device whose poloidal cross section is 40 cm in diameter.

Soft Sensory-Motor System Based on Ionic Solution for Robotic Applications.

Sensors (Basel)

May 2024

DCA-FEEC-UNICAMP, Sao Paulo 13083-852, Brazil.

Soft robots claim the architecture of actuators, sensors, and computation demands with their soft bodies by obtaining fast responses and adapting to the environment. Sensory-motor coordination is one of the main design principles utilized for soft robots because it allows the capability to sense and actuate mutually in the environment, thereby achieving rapid response performance. This work intends to study the response for a system that presents coupled actuation and sensing functions simultaneously and is integrated in an arbitrary elastic structure with ionic conduction elements, called as soft sensory-motor system based on ionic solution (SSMS-IS).
