DMC (1) is a phytochemical found in the seeds of Syzygium nervosum, exhibiting anticancer activity in various cells through multiple pathways. Herein, the bioactivity of DMC (1) was enhanced by chemical modification through esterification, attaching fatty acid and amino acid moieties to yield 27 semi-synthetic derivatives. These compounds were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against three main types of cervical cancer cells, including SiHa, HeLa, and C-33A.

Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) is a reversible post-translational modification that regulates various biological processes in eukaryotes. Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 9 (UBC9) is the sole E2-conjugating enzyme responsible for SUMOylation and plays an important role in essential cellular functions. Here, we cloned the UBC9 gene from sea perch (Lateolabrax japonicus) (LjUBC9) and investigated its role in regulating the IFN response during red-spotted grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) infection.

Breast cancer accounts for up to 10% of the newly diagnosed cancer cases worldwide, making it the most common cancer found in women. The use of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) has been beneficial in the advancement of contrast agents and magnetic hyperthermia (MH) for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. To achieve delivery of SPIONs to cancer cells, surface functionalization with specific ligands are required.

Two dimensional GC (GC × GC)-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) has been used to improve accurate metabolite identification in the chemical industry, but this method has not been applied as readily in biomedical research. Here, we evaluated and validated the performance of high resolution GC × GC-TOFMS against that of GC-TOFMS for metabolomics analysis of two different plasma matrices, from healthy controls (CON) and diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with kidney failure (DM with KF). We found GC × GC-TOFMS outperformed traditional GC-TOFMS in terms of separation performance and metabolite coverage.

The electrophilic potential of vinyl sulfone permits the rapid capture of cysteine-containing proteins under physiological conditions. These cysteine proteinases play vital roles in bacterial survival and pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and the global health threat methicillin resistant S.
