The title compound, C(8)H(13)N(5), is a novel functionally substituted 5-alkyltetrazole. The substituent on the tetrazole C atom is symmetrical, with intrinsic symmetry close to m. There is intermolecular N-H.N hydrogen bonding between adjacent tetrazole rings, which is responsible for the formation of one-dimensional polymeric chains running along the c axis. The polycrystalline compound exhibits frequency doubling for incident light (lambda = 1064 nm) from a YAG:Nd pulsed laser.

Differently substituted pyrrole-azo‑benzene molecular photoswitches were prepared in a straightforward synthetic way. Their fundamental properties were investigated by XRD analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, cyclic voltammetry, UV‑Vis absorption spectroscopy, Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering, and NMR spectroscopy; the experimental results were further corroborated by DFT calculations. Thermal robustness, the HOMO/LUMO levels, and the absorption properties were altered mostly by substituting the N‑methylpyrrole moiety and further fine-tuned by modifying the benzene substituents.

One interesting and elusive two-coupled oscillator problem.

Neurobiol Sleep Circadian Rhythms

May 2025

Instituto de Biociências, Departamento de Fisiologia, Universidade de São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Chronobiology experiments often reveal intriguing non-linear phenomena, which require mathematical models and computer simulations for their interpretation. One example is shown here, where the two circadian oscillators located in the eyes of the mollusk were isolated and measured . By maintaining one eye under control conditions and manipulating the period of the second eye, Page and Nalovic (1992) obtained a diversity of results, including synchronized and desynchronized eyes, associated to weak coupling and period differences.

With a view towards the development of molecular spintronics, non-linear optics, and qubits, a great amount of research effort aims to establish the factors which govern the spin classification of diradicals. Electron spin resonance (ESR) is an indispensable tool for such research. However, in some cases, the mere presence of an ESR spectrum is insufficient to ascertain that the presumed diradical is indeed a triplet state.

Strong enhancement of effective refractive index in structured colloids (TiO@Silica): Localization of light.

Nanoscale

December 2024

Instituto de Física "Gleb Wataghin", Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Campinas, SP 13083-859, Brazil.

We use non-resonant Raman scattering to demonstrate a large enhancement of the effective refractive index experienced by Raman photons in a scattering medium comprising spatially-correlated photonic structures of core-shell TiO@Silica scatterers mixed with silica nanoparticles and suspended in ethanol. We show that the high refractive index extends outside the physical boundary of the medium, which is attributed to the evanescent contributions of electromagnetic modes that are strongly localized within the medium. Notably, the effective enhancement can be observed even at very low intensities of Raman emission.

Background: Several nutrients have been found to be associated with the prevalence of myopia, and the role of dietary patterns in influencing myopia risk has recently garnered significant attention. We aim to explore the relationship between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and refractive status in adolescents.

Methods: Data from 7,331 participants were analyzed from the 2005-2008 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
