Objective: Infection with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), like HIV, can lead to central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. One of the alterations observed in the brain is the accumulation of highly activated CD8 lymphocytes that, while fighting the infection, may cause tissue damage. In order to determine whether these CD8 cells in the brain comprise a distinct clonal population the expression of T-cell receptor (TCR) genes of two SIV-infected monkeys with CNS abnormalities were analyzed, comparing brain to periphery.

Methods: RNA from magnetically sorted CD8+ cells obtained from the brain, blood, lymph nodes, and spleen was analyzed for the distribution of 24 Vbeta family genes by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction followed by Southern blot. The CDR3 region of the most enriched family in each brain was sequenced in all the sites for comparison.

Results: The pattern of Vbeta distribution in the brain and the periphery was polyclonal, but an increase in certain Vbeta families was found in the brain, suggesting that regional mechanisms participate in the determination of the local clonal specificities. The sequence of the CDR3 domain of predominant Vbeta families in the brain revealed that approximately one-third of the CD8 cells were not identified in the periphery.

Conclusion: CD8 cells in the brain exhibit a distinct clonal repertoire. This distinction may have implications for regional immunity, regulation, or selection of site-specific viral mutants.

Interspecific hybridization between relative species (with a diploid genome designated as TT), (EE) and (NN) and the successive polyploidization with transitions from sexuality to asexuality experienced by triploid hybrids likely influence their chromosomal rearrangements, including rearrangements of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) distribution patterns. Previously, we documented distinct karyotypic differences: exhibited bi-armed chromosomes while showed uni-armed chromosomes with rDNA-positive hybridization signals, respectively. In this study, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with rDNA and rDNA probes was used to analyze and compare chromosomal distribution patterns of rDNAs in clonally reproduced triploid hybrids of different genomic constitutions ETT, ETN, EEN and EET (referred to using acronyms denoting the haploid genomes of their parent species), and their parental species.

Background: Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is a significant burden globally, particularly in the Arabian Gulf region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced rising MRSA prevalence, with increasing diversity in the clonal complexes (CCs) identified. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its increased hospitalization rates and antibiotic use, may have further influenced MRSA's genetic evolution and epidemiology in the country.

Objectives: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a commonly reported pathogen which adapts to multiple hosts and causes critical disease burden at a global level. Here, we investigated a recently derived epidemic sublineage with multidrug resistance (MDR), which have caused extended time-period and cross-regional gastroenteritis outbreaks and even invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella disease (iNTS) in China.

Neutropenia in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a problem that often needs to be addressed. Side effects of basic antirheumatic treatment, infections or substrate deficiencies are common causes; however, T‑cell large granular lymphocytic (T-LGL) leukemia, a mature T‑cell neoplasm, can also lead to autoimmune cytopenia. The T‑LGL leukemia can be associated not only with RA but also with other autoimmune diseases or neoplasms.

Background/objectives: Dartmoor Estate Tea plantation in Devon, UK, is renowned for its unique microclimate and varied soil conditions, which contribute to the distinctive flavours and chemical profiles of tea. The chemical diversity of fresh leaf samples from various garden locations was explored within the plantation.

Methods: Fresh leaf, which differed by location, cultivar, time of day, and variety, was analysed using Flow Infusion Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (FIE-MS).
