The mechanisms of injury of the human neck are potentially related to the forces and bending moments acting on the spinal column. An injury criterion that combines the effects of the time history of force and moment, N(ij), has been adopted by the USA federal government for vehicle crash regulations. This paper presents two analytical approaches to evaluate the N(ij) injury criterion using previously published biomechanical data: a direct fit optimization analysis and a statistical analysis. The results show that no values used in the N(ij) criterion corresponding to compressive force, extension moment and flexion moment will optimally separate the injury and non-injury cases in the biomechanical data set. Only the tensile force allows identification of the injury risk. All indications are that increasing the weight given to moment decreases the accuracy of the prediction.

Development of an Equivalent Analysis Model of PVB Laminated Glass for TRAM Crash Safety Analysis.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hanyang University ERICA, 55, Hanyangdaehak-ro, Sangnok-gu, Ansan-si 15588, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea.

This study focuses on an equivalent model of Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) laminated glass to simulate the Head Injury Criterion (HIC) when a pedestrian collides with a TRAM. To simulate the collision behavior that occurs when a pedestrian's head collides with PVB laminated glass, a comparison was made between the results of the widely used PLC model for PVB laminated glass modeling and an actual dynamic head impact test. The material properties of the tempered glass and PVB film used in the PLC and equivalent models were obtained via four-point bending tests and tensile tests, respectively.

Clinical Utility and Performance of the Traditional Chinese Version of the 4-As Test for Delirium Due to Traumatic Brain Injury.

J Acad Consult Liaison Psychiatry

January 2025

School of Nursing, College of Nursing, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Nursing, Taipei Medical University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: Delirium is a common symptom following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that is often overlooked by healthcare professionals. Early detection of post-traumatic delirium is crucial to improving patient outcomes and quality of life. The four As Test (4AT: alertness, attention, abbreviated mental test-4, and acute mental changes) is a brief and rapid tool for delirium assessment with acceptable reliability and validity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of short stress-coping interventions (cardiac biofeedback, mindfulness, and positive psychology) on the OSCE performance of medical students.
  • Despite no significant improvement in academic scores for any intervention group compared to the control, students reported a more positive perception of their performance after the interventions.
  • Conclusively, these brief interventions did not enhance students' actual academic performance during the OSCE, though they influenced their self-assessment.

Background: The objective of this paper was to determine whether the medicolegal assessment of injured and disabled persons is based on the biopsychosocial model of disability proposed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health.

Methods: We searched for the word disability and other keywords, occurring alone or in combination as well as the meaning given to the word "disability" in two Belgian legal databases (JURA and STRADALEX) for the period from 1960 to 2020.

Results: The use of the term disability has increased over time, more so from 2001 to 2010, in areas of public health law, labor relations, and personal injury law.
