In this study, we examined the effects of ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) upon heterophyllous leaf formation of Ludwigia arcuata Walt. Treatment with ethylene gas resulted in the formation of submerged-type leaves on terrestrial shoots of L. arcuata, while treatments with ABA induced the formation of terrestrial-type leaves on submerged shoots. Measurement of the endogenous ethylene concentration of submerged shoots showed that it was higher than that of terrestrial ones. In contrast, the endogenous ABA concentration of terrestrial shoots was higher than that of submerged ones. To clarify interactions of ethylene and ABA, simultaneous additions of these two plant hormones were examined. When L. arcuata plants were treated with these two plant hormones, the effects of ABA dominated that of ethylene, resulting in the formation of terrestrial-type leaves. This suggests that ABA may be located downstream of ethylene in signal transduction chains for forming heterophyllous changes. Further, ethylene treatment induced the reduction of endogenous levels of ABA in tissues of L. arcuata, resulting in the formation of submerged-type leaves. Thus the effects of ethylene and ABA upon heterophyllous leaf formation are discussed in relationship to the cross-talk between signaling pathways of ethylene and ABA.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) remains a major obstacle for effective delivery of therapeutics to treat central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Although transferrin receptor (TfR)-mediated transcytosis is widely employed for brain drug delivery, the inefficient release of therapeutic payload hinders their efficacy from crossing the BBB. Here, we developed a pH-responsive anti-polyethylene glycol (PEG) × anti-TfR bispecific antibody (pH-PEG engager) that can complex with PEGylated nanomedicine at physiological pH to trigger TfR-mediated transcytosis in the brain microvascular endothelial cells, while rapidly dissociating from PEGylated nanomedicine at acidic endosomes for efficient release of PEGylated nanomedicine to cross the BBB.

The objective of this study is to comprehensively to identify the core pharmacological components and their respective targets of three medicinal fungi Sanghuangs including Sanghuangporus vaninii (SV), Sanghuangporus lonicericola (SL), and Inonotus hispidus (IH). Metabolomics analysis indicated that a total of 495 and 660 differential metabolites were obtained in mycelium and fermentation broth samples among three Sanghuangs, respectively. The network pharmacology analysis showed that 6-[1]-ladderane hexanol, R-nostrenol, candidone, ellagic acid, and quercetin were the overlapping active ingredients of three Sanghuang species for diabetes mellitus, immune system disease, and neoplasm.

Plants frequently confront pathogens that disrupt physiological and molecular functions, ultimately reducing agricultural yields. To counter these challenges, plants activate sophisticated defense mechanisms to recognize stress signals while optimizing growth. Phytohormones signaling pathways and their crosstalk are central to regulating plant growth, development and defense.

Industrial Engineering Department, School of Applied Technical Sciences, German Jordanian University, Amman, 11180, Jordan.

In this investigation, the influence of a combination of poly(ethylene-oxide) (PEO) and salt (NaCl) as water-soluble porogens on the synthesis of sustainable porous poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) membranes is explored. Nine mixture compositions are examined. PCL sheets are fabricated through the cryomilling, hot pressing, and porogen leaching approach.

Hybrid density functionals, such as B3LYP and PBE0, have achieved remarkable success by substantially improving over their parent methods, namely Hartree-Fock and the generalized gradient approximation, and generally outperforming the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) that is more expensive. Here, we extend the linear scheme of hybrid multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (HMC-PDFT) by incorporating a cross-entropy ingredient to balance the description of static and dynamic correlation effects, leading to a consistent improvement on both exchange and correlation energies. The B3LYP-like translated on-top functional (tB4LYP) developed along this line not only surpasses the accuracy of its parent methods, the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and the original MC-PDFT functionals (tBLYP and tB3LYP), but also outperforms the widely used complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2).
