[reaction: see text] A new method for the synthesis of beta-cyclodextrin-based cluster mannosides by application of the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction is described. The method allows for the persubstitution of the beta-cyclodextrin at either 2- and 3-positions to give two types of heptavalent clusters, at both 2- and 6-positions to give clusters with 14 mannopyranoside units and at 2-, 3-, and 6-positions to obtain clusters with 21 mannopyranoside ligands.

Article Synopsis
  • Polysaccharides are common organic compounds with complex structures, and understanding their order and disorder is challenging.
  • This study used techniques like FT-IR, methylation analysis, and H NMR spectroscopy to evaluate the structural order of polysaccharides from various regions, identifying four main structural types with specific glycoside linkages.
  • The findings support a theoretical framework for classifying polysaccharide structures, revealing key characteristics of heteroglucans and heterogalactans that help simplify their complexity.

Penta-iodination of the B2-6 positions of the {CB} monocarborane cluster is reported. Products of the structure [2,3,4,5,6-I-CBH-12-X] (X = H, Me, Et, Ph, Br, I) were obtained and fully characterized. X-ray crystal structures of three new compounds confirm this particular substitution pattern.

Avian haemosporidian parasites are particularly diverse and widespread. To date, more than 3,000 distinct cytochrome b lineages have been recorded, of which some present extremely wide geographical distributions, even including multiple continents. Whether these isolates represent one or several cryptic species remains unknown.

Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations are executed to characterize gas phase, isolated (fructose + (HO)) (n = 1-5) anionic species produced using a matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) method. Gas phase, isolated (fructose + (HO)) (n = 1-5) cluster anions mainly exist as open chain structures with conformational and positional isomers in the present experiments. Some cyclic structures of (fructose + (HO)) (n = 3, 4) are apparently present in the experiments and their VDEs can contribute to the lower energy shoulders of PES features observed for (fructose + (HO)) (n = 3, 4).

Novel sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) copolymers (S4PH-x-PSs) based on a new aromatic diol containing four phenyl substituents at the 2, 2', 6, and 6' positions of 4,4'-diphenyl ether were synthesized. Sulfonation was found to occur exclusively on the 4 position of phenyl substituents by NMR spectroscopy. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) values can be controlled by adjusting the mole percent (x in S4PH-x-PS) of the new diol.
