Objective: To study the role of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) in the pathogenesis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Methods: The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum in 13 patients with ARDS and 9 healthy controls were collected. The contents of IL-1beta were measured by enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay(ELISA).
Results: The levels of IL-1beta in BALF [(144.67+/-80.79)ng/L] and serum [(45.71+/-7.09)ng/L] in patients with ARDS were significantly higher than those in the control groups [(20.39+/-1.87)ng/L, P=0.000; (35.06+/-5.46)ng/L, P=0.001, respectively], and the levels of IL-1beta in BALF were also significantly higher than those of the serum in the patients with ARDS (P=0.000).
Conclusion: The results indicate that IL-1beta is involved in the pathogenesis of ARDS. Early determination of IL-1beta level in BALF may be more valuable in the evaluation of disease process of ARDS.

Introduction And Objectives: This retrospective study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the risk of postoperative acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in patients with Stanford type A acute aortic dissection.
Methods: The study included patients who underwent surgical repair for Stanford type A acute aortic dissection between January 2020 and December 2023. Demographic data, surgical details, intraoperative information, and postoperative outcomes were collected.

Introduction: Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) is increasingly used in the treatment of severe respiratory failure. Despite a significant increase in the worldwide use of extracorporeal lung assist devices recirculation remains a common complication and is associated with a reduced effectiveness of ECMO support and increased hemolysis. In this observational study we aimed to investigate the impact of cannula configuration and extracorporeal flow on recirculation.

Introduction: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is frequently considered and implemented to help manage patients with cardiogenic shock from acute poisoning. However, utilization of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in acutely poisoned patients is largely unknown.
Method: We conducted a retrospective study analyzing the epidemiologic, clinical characteristics and survival of acutely poisoned patients placed on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation using the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization registry.

Multisystemic smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome (MSMDS) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in the gene, resulting in variable clinical manifestation and multi-organ dysfunction. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a rare phenotype of this condition. We describe a rare infant case of an 8-month-old boy who presented with progressively worsening dyspnea, along with intermittent episodes of respiratory distress and cyanosis since birth.

Despite the established anti-fibrotic effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), numerous challenges hinder their clinical application. A recent study demonstrated that microvesicles (MVs) from MSCs (MSC-MVs) could attenuate ARDS-related pulmonary fibrosis and enhance lung function hepatocyte growth factor mRNA transcription.
