Capsaicin, a polyphenol, is known to regulate energy expenditure and thermogenesis in adipocytes and muscles. However, its role in modulating uncoupling proteins (UCPs) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-dependent thermogenesis in muscles remains unclear. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying the role of capsaicin in modulating the UCP- and ATP-dependent thermogenesis in C2C12 myoblasts, as well as the gastrocnemius (GM) and soleus muscles (SM) of mice.

Phosphatases are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphate esters. They play critical roles in diverse biological processes such as extracellular nucleotide homeostasis, transport of molecules across membranes, intracellular signaling pathways, or vertebrate mineralization. Among them, tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) is today increasingly studied, due to its ubiquitous expression and its ability to dephosphorylate a very broad range of substrates and participate in several different biological functions.

Acetivibrio thermocellus (formerly Clostridium thermocellum) is a potential platform for lignocellulosic ethanol production. Its industrial application is hampered by low product titres, resulting from a low thermodynamic driving force of its central metabolism. It possesses both a functional ATP- and a functional PP-dependent 6-phosphofructokinase (PP-Pfk), of which only the latter is held responsible for the low driving force.

Pyruvate kinase catalyzes the irreversible final step of glycolysis, yet the physiological function of its regulation is poorly understood. Through metabolomics and enzyme kinetics studies, we discovered that pyruvate kinase activity is inhibited during gluconeogenesis in the soil bacterium .

In clinics, chemotherapy is often combined with surgery and radiation to increase the chances of curing cancers. In the case of glioblastoma (GBM), patients are treated with a combination of radiotherapy and TMZ over several weeks. Despite its common use, the mechanism of action of the alkylating agent TMZ has not been well understood when it comes to its cytotoxic effects in tumor cells that are mostly non-dividing.
