On July 27, 1999, the first author found a unilaterally winged adult glowworm in a park in the city of Mainz. Except for the wings on the left side, the specimen exhibited female characteristics that extended to external sexual appendages, the lantern and the gonads. The internal organization showed some remarkable differences between right (wingless) and left (winged) side. The right ovary contained three times more mature eggs than the left side and the volume of the corpus allatum of this side was about one-third larger than that of the left side. This suggests that aptery and egg maturation are affected by corpus allatum activity, i.e., juvenile hormone production. The findings do not support the hypothesis of Naisse ([1966] Arch Biol Liège 77:139-201) that wing formation, as a secondary male characteristic, is controlled by an androgenic hormone from the testes in the glowworm. Thus, the observations on this exceptional specimen have implications for the current hypotheses concerning the control of sexual wing dimorphism in Lampyris noctiluca.

The pupillary direct and consensual reflex is an important non-invasive quick assessment of the neurological state of the eye. Currently, there is no cheap and affordable recording tool for screening and documentation of a relative afferent pupillary defect. We describe how to construct a frugal, do-it-yourself handheld scotopic binocular pupillometer device called Pupilmate.

Purpose: Describe the immunohistologic changes in arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis treated using plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA) versus paclitaxel drug-coated balloons (DCB) MATERIALS AND METHODS: Castrated male Yorkshire pigs (n = 12) 4-5 months old had chronic kidney disease (CKD) induced with renal artery embolization. Twenty-eight days later, a side-to-end anastomosis was created between the left common carotid artery to ipsilateral external jugular vein. Four weeks later, a juxta anastomotic stenosis was treated with balloon angioplasty (PTA) or DCB and animals euthanized at 4 [POBA (n=6)] and 42 days [POBA (n=3) or DCB (n=3)] for histomorphometric analysis with immunohistochemical staining for CD-68 (macrophages), FSP-1 (fibroblasts), α-SMA (smooth muscle cells, SMCs), CD-31 (endothelial), proliferation (Ki-67), and apoptosis (TUNEL).

Purpose: To determine the adverse events (AEs) rate associated with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) and identify risk factors for their occurrence.
Materials And Methods: This single-center retrospective study included 2310 PTBD (right-side: 1164; left-sided: 966; bilateral: 180) interventions for biliary obstruction (benign/malignant) in 449 patients between 2010-2020. Patients with percutaneous cholecystostomy alone were excluded.

Background: Signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) originates from undifferentiated stem cells in the neck of glands within the lamina propria of the mucosa. Primarily affecting the stomach, SRCC can also involve the breast, pancreas, gallbladder, colon, and bladder, although these cases are rare. SRCC of the prostate is extremely rare, and diagnosing it pelvic puncture is particularly challenging.
