Two shell color types of the exotic bivalve Corbicula fluminea were collected in Kyoto city, Japan. DNA microfluorometry revealed that both types were diploids with non-reductional spermatozoa. Maternal chromosomes were found to be extruded as two polar bodies at the first meiosis, and the second meiosis could not be observed. Only the male pronucleus was present in the egg cytoplasm and became metaphase chromosomes at the first mitosis. The present study indicates that the diploid C. fluminea in Japan has the same mode of androgenetic reproduction as the triploid C. leana.

To identify novel genes responsible for recurrent hydatidiform moles (HMs), we performed exome sequencing on 75 unrelated patients who were negative for mutations in the known genes. We identified biallelic deleterious variants in 6 genes, FOXL2, MAJIN, KASH5, SYCP2, MEIOB, and HFM1, in patients with androgenetic HMs, including a familial case of 3 affected members. Five of these genes are essential for meiosis I, and their deficiencies lead to premature ovarian insufficiency.

This article focuses on hydatidiform mole (HM), which is the most common form of gestational trophoblastic disease and the most studied at the genomic and genetic levels. We summarize current laboratory methods to diagnose HM, discuss their limitations and advantages, and share the lessons we have learned. We also provide an overview of the history of recurrent HM, their known genetic etiologies, and the mechanisms of their formation.

Unlabelled: Although meiosis plays an essential role for the survival of species in natural selection, the genetic diversity resulting from sexual reproduction impedes human-driven strategies to transmit the most suitable genomes for genetic improvement, forcing breeders to select diploid genomes generated after fertilization, that is, after the encounter of sperm and oocytes carrying unknown genomes. To determine whether genomic assessment could be used before fertilization, some androgenetic haploid morula-stage bovine embryos derived from individual sperm were biopsied for genomic evaluation and others used to reconstruct "semi-cloned" (SC) diploid zygotes by the intracytoplasmic injection into parthenogenetically activated oocytes, and the resulting embryos were transferred to surrogate females to obtain gestations. Compared to controls, in vitro development to the blastocyst stage was lower and fewer surrogates became pregnant from the transfer of SC embryos.
