The paper discusses preclinical tests of a new viscoelastic preparation for ophthalmosurgery. Experiments revealed that preparation Duo-Bonharen which contains hyaluronic acid prepared by bacterial fermentation is suited for clinical tests. After a 24-hour interval following administration into the anterior chamber it does not raise intraocular pressure. In experiments it has no side-effects on the eye. The dispersed form in a higher concentration (5%) adheres very well to ocular tissues and protects them adequately during surgery. The cohesive form in an optimal concentration (1.5%) can be rapidly removed from inside the eye. The properties of Duo-Bonharen in experiments are comparable with similar viscomaterials which are used. The new viscoelastic material Duo-Bonharen appears suitable for clinical tests in particular for cataract surgery.

This study successfully developed a gelatin-sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-peach gum composite microcapsule system using the complex coacervation method. Optimal preparation conditions were determined by turbidity, complex condensate yield and encapsulation efficiency: the ratio of gelatin to sodium carboxymethyl cellulose was 7:1, the ratio of gelatin/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to peach gum was 4:1, and the pH value was 4.2.

This study evaluated the properties of lentil protein, pea protein, quinoa protein, and soy protein as natural nanoparticle stabilizers and their interactions with pectin and chitin nanofiber in preparing high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs). The globular plant proteins interact with polysaccharides through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, transforming the structure into complex morphologies, including fibrous and elliptical shapes. These complex nanoparticles exhibited enhanced thermal decomposition stability, and the HIPPEs constructed by them demonstrated significantly improved apparent viscosity and elastic modulus, with a yield stress of 931.

This study aims to enhance the emulsifying properties of soybean peptide aggregates (SPA) by preparing SPA-soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) composite particles at the assistance of ultrasound technique. The optimal pH for SPA and SSPS complexation was determined by measuring the charge and particle size of the composites. The effects of ultrasound power and duration on the physicochemical properties of the composite particles were assessed through measurements of particle size, zeta potential, contact angle, FTIR, and SEM.

Pinch-off dynamics of emulsion filaments before and after polymerization of the internal phase.

Soft Matter

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544, USA.

The capillary break-up of complex fluid filaments occurs in many scientific and industrial applications, particularly in bio-printing where both liquid and polymerized droplets exist in the fluid. The simultaneous presence of fluid and solid particles within a carrier fluid and their interactions lead to deviations in the filament break-up from the well-established capillary breakup dynamics of single-phase liquids. To examine the significance of the dispersed phase and the internal interactions between liquid droplets and solid particles, we prepare emulsions through photopolymerization and conduct experimental investigations into the pinch-off dynamics of fluid filaments, focusing on the impact of varying concentrations of liquid droplets (before polymerization) and polymerized droplets.

Thermoresponsive shape memory polymer (SMP) adhesives have demonstrated a high adhesion strength and large switching ratios on different substrates. However, a long response time to switch adhesion on or off is generally encountered. This study provides a fast adhesion switching method based on the temperature and rate dependence of adhesion within the glass-transition zone of an epoxy polymer.
