The authors have analyzed 445 patients (464 eyes) living in the Leningrad Region who underwent the removal of age and complicated cataracts (except posttraumatic and diabetic). The pupils width was evaluated against the background of mydriasis with instillations of 1% tropicamid solution. The patients were investigated for the presence of pseudoexfoliative syndrome (PES) and glaucoma. Narrow pupil, PES and glaucoma were observed more often in men than in women (P < 0.05). In patients with isolated PES the narrow pupil was revealed in 32.6%, with isolated glaucoma--in 41.4%, with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma--in 90.9% of the cases. In eyes without PES and glaucoma the narrow pupil was noted in 1.2%. The frequency of detection of narrow pupils increases with age (in patients older than 50 years) and depends on the degree of cataract maturity.

Purpose: To present a novel optical model explaining why the vast majority of patients with Asteroid Hyalosis (AH) do not perceive any floaters. This changes our understanding of floater perception and undermines the operation mode of YAG laser vitreolysis.
Methods: Relying on a previously published model of floater perception based on astronomical equations of a solar eclipse, and on ultrasound images of the vitreous in three eyes with AH, we explain why such patients do not perceive floaters in spite of opaque bodies filling their entire vitreous, to the point of, in severe cases of AH, obscuring the fundus view during ophthalmoscopy.

Background: To analyze the difference and agreement between measurements obtained by a new fully automatic optical biometer, the SW-9000 μm Plus, based on optical low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR) and a commonly used optical biometer (Pentacam AXL) based on Scheimpflug imaging with partial coherence interferometry (PCI).
Methods: The central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD, from epithelium to anterior lens surface), lens thickness (LT), mean keratometry (K), corneal astigmatism, corneal diameter (CD), pupil diameter (PD), and axial length (AL) of 74 eyes (from 74 healthy subjects) were measured using the SW-9000 μm Plus and the Pentacam AXL to determine the agreement. Double angle plots were used for astigmatism vector analysis.

Pupillometry is widely used to measure arousal states. The primary functional role of the pupil, however, is to respond to the luminance of visual inputs. We previously demonstrated that cognitive effort-related arousal interacted multiplicatively with luminance, with the strongest pupillary effects of arousal occurring at low-to-mid luminances (< 37 cd/m), implying a narrow range of conditions ideal for assessing cognitive arousal-driven pupillary differences.
