Pollutants removal in two vertical flow experimental wetlands receiving pre-treated municipal wastewater was investigated. Laboratory investigations using microcosms were also carried out in order to identify key processes regulating pollutants removal. Results obtained from experimental wetlands seem to confirm the ability of a single stage installation, where nitrification and denitrification processes are jointly optimised using a gravel medium, always wet but not saturated with water. Results obtained from microcosm investigations show the prominent role of O2 supply, of microbial activity and of bio-available C from vegetal metabolism in the nitrogen removal.

In 2020, the largest continuous wetland area on the planet, the Brazilian Pantanal, experienced an unprecedented fire that affected the entire ecosystem. Our goal was to elucidate the effects of ash presence following the fire events. We quantified the impact of ashes, collected in four Conservation Units, on soil, water, and atmosphere.

Metal mining operations can release toxic metals to surrounding environments where site-specific conditions control the movement of contaminants. Colloid-facilitated transport, the transport of contaminants with small, mobile particles, has been recognized as a potential contaminant transport vector in groundwater, but it remains unclear under what conditions it is important and whether neutral, metal-rich mine drainage from legacy mining impacts this transport vector. This work presents a set of laboratory column experiments that study the effect of colloids on metal mobility in saturated, wetland sediment that has been receiving neutral mine drainage for nearly a century, using mixed and single metal input solutions at neutral pH.

Imidacloprid (IMI), as an emerging pollutant, is frequently detected in pesticide wastewater. Cobalt-based single-atom catalysts (Co-SACs) doped with sulfur atoms can serve as an efficient strategy to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degrade organic pollutants. The paper employed density functional theory and computational toxicology to deeply explore the mechanism and ecotoxicity of IMI when S atoms were introduced into Co-SACs for PMS activation.

Wetland macrophytes play a critical role in the performance of treatment wetlands (TWs), primarily through nutrient uptake. However, this retention is temporary, as nutrients are released back into the water upon the decomposition of plant litter. The removal of stored nutrients from TWs can be efficiently achieved by harvesting plants during the peak of the growing season, albeit with significant ecological disturbance.

Bird species detection is critical for applications such as the analysis of bird population dynamics and species diversity. However, this task remains challenging due to local structural similarities and class imbalances among bird species. Currently, most deep learning algorithms focus on designing local feature extraction modules while ignoring the importance of global information.
