Effect of thyroid hormone on gene expression.

Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care

French Institute of Health and Medical Research, Toulouse University Hospitals, Toulouse, France.

Published: July 2003

Purpose Of Review: Thyroid hormones are key regulators of development and metabolism that modulate transcription via nuclear receptors. Although the molecular actions of thyroid hormones have been thoroughly studied, their pleiotropic effects are mediated by complex changes in expression of numerous, but still largely unknown, target genes. This review summarizes the recent advances in the characterization of target genes in different organs.

Recent Findings: New patterns of gene expression regulation have been described in tissues with known physiological actions of thyroid hormone, that is brain, liver, skeletal and cardiac muscles, and brown and white adipose tissues. The studies have benefited from the numerous transgenic models with altered thyroid hormone receptor expression and the application of DNA microarray technology to mouse and human tissues.

Summary: Data on thyroid hormone-mediated control of gene expression and on the roles of the different thyroid hormone receptor isoforms bring new clues to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action in physiological situations and, most importantly, in diseases associated with alterations of the thyroid status.

Introduction: Thyroid disease (TD), particularly hypothyroidism, is an important etiology of hyperprolactinemia (HPRL). We conducted a systematic review of the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of adults (> 18 years) with this clinical association.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurobehavioral condition characterized by disruption of behavioral and emotional patterns in individuals with this condition. Given that various environmental and genetic factors play a fundamental role in the pathophysiology of ASD, it can be said that ASD is a multifaceted disease. This study used scientific databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Semantic Scholar.

Spatially dependent tissue distribution of thyroid hormones by plasma thyroid hormone binding proteins.

Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, 30322, USA.

Plasma thyroid hormone (TH) binding proteins (THBPs), including thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), transthyretin (TTR), and albumin (ALB), carry THs to extrathyroidal sites, where THs are unloaded locally and then taken up via membrane transporters into the tissue proper. The respective roles of THBPs in supplying THs for tissue uptake are not completely understood. To investigate this, we developed a spatial human physiologically based kinetic (PBK) model of THs, which produces several novel findings.

Radiation therapy for childhood-onset craniopharyngioma: systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Neurooncol

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, Genetics and Metabolism, Beijing Children's Hospital, National Center for Children's Health, Capital Medical University, Beijing, 100045, China.

Background: Craniopharyngioma (CP), a benign tumor originating from remnants of Rathke's pouch in the sellar region, accounts for approximately 30% of all cases of craniopharyngioma. Radiation therapy has been used to treat CP patients for decades; however, there is still a lack of systematic reviews on the long-term tumor control outcomes in pediatric CP patients treated with external radiation therapy.

Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of multiple databases for studies on the tumor progression rates of childhood-onset CP(COCP) patients who received external radiotherapy.
