Metastatic pulmonary ameloblastoma. An unusual case.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, UK.

Published: June 2003

We present a patient who had a large metastatic pulmonary ameloblastoma resected 25 years after removal of an apparently benign primary ameloblastoma of the jaw. It highlights three areas: problems with the histopathological diagnosis of pulmonary metastases using fine needle aspiration; a noted radiological improvement after a 5-year course of oral cyclophosphamide, in keeping with occasional patients who have responded to chemotherapy; and the technical difficulties of resection of a large pulmonary metastasis, particularly when it is adherent to the mediastinum.

Background: While prosthesis-associated malignancies have been acknowledged, awareness among surgeons and patients in the ophthalmologic field remains limited, despite the frequent occurrence of prosthesis-related surgeries. We aim to address this gap through a scoping review of malignancies following ophthalmologic surgeries involving various foreign device/prosthesis/implants.

Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a review using PubMed and Embase for studies on cancer and ophthalmic prostheses/implants.

Unlabelled: Using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, our cohort study matched 237,297 individuals with hearing loss (HL) to 829,431 without HL. The study found an 8-10% higher risk of major osteoporotic fracture in individuals with HL compared to those without. Additionally, within the HL cohort, we identified risk factors for potential inclusion in fracture risk models.

Characterization of Bozitinib as a potential therapeutic agent for MET-amplified gastric cancer.

Department of Oncology, NHC Key Laboratory of Cancer Proteomics & State Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Anticancer Drugs, National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Disorders, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Hyperactive c-Met signaling pathway caused by altered MET is a common mechanism underlying gastric cancer and represents an attractive target for the treatment of gastric cancer with MET alterations. However, no c-Met kinase inhibitors are currently approved specifically for the treatment of c-Met-amplified gastric cancer. Recently, bozitinib, a highly selective c-Met kinase inhibitor, has shown remarkable potency in selectively inhibiting MET-altered non-small cell lung cancer and secondary glioblastoma.

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is characterised by sterile vegetations on heart valves and often emerges in hypercoagulable states like malignancy. It is frequently underdiagnosed and only comes to light during postmortem examination. Early diagnosis and treatment with anticoagulation can help lower mortality.

Pharmacokinetic modeling of prenatal vitamin D exposure and the impact on offspring asthma and pulmonary function.

Biomed Pharmacother

Channing Division of Network Medicine, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. Electronic address:

Gestational 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) is important in fetal lung development and may influence offspring respiratory outcomes, making accurate exposure assessment essential to understand clinical associations. Therefore, we used the combined data from two large RCTs investigating prenatal vitamin D supplementation, which included early and late prenatal 25(OH)D measurements, to refine a population pharmacokinetic model of vitamin D-25(OH)D and estimate individual area under the curve (AUC) Z-scores. The primary outcome was physician-diagnosed offspring asthma/wheezing at ages 3 and 6 years, and lung function, as a secondary outcome, was evaluated by spirometry at the ages 6 and 8 years.
