Almost 100 years elapsed after the discovery of dendritic cells in the human skin epithelium by Paul Langerhans in 1868 until the initiation of research on those cells was reinitiated. The present paper provides the milestones in the research on Langerhans/dendritic cells (LCs/DCs) between 1960 and 1989. This historical review will explain how researchers gradually discovered the role of the bone marrow-derived dendritic cells in the immune response. The paper is an appendix to the manuscript entitled: "Immunological and regulatory functions of uninfected and infected immature and mature subtypes of dendritic cells" (Virus Genes 26: 119-130, 2003).

Micronodular thymic carcinoma (MTC) with lymphoid hyperplasia is believed to be the malignant counterpart of micronodular thymoma (MT) with lymphoid hyperplasia. Since MT and MTC share a similar morphology, MTC is considered a malignant form of MT; there have been a few malignant transformations from MT to MTC. We report a case of MTC with lymphoid hyperplasia.

Posttransplant vaccination targeting residual disease is an immunotherapeutic strategy to improve antigen-specific immune responses and prolong disease-free survival after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for multiple myeloma (MM). We conducted a phase 1 vaccine trial to determine the safety, toxicity, and immunogenicity of autologous Langerhans-type dendritic cells (LCs) electroporated with CT7, MAGE-A3, and Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) messenger RNA (mRNA), after ASCT for MM. Ten patients received a priming immunization plus 2 boosters at 12, 30, and 90 days, respectively, after ASCT.

Background: Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-β family that signal via the BMP receptor (BMPR) signaling cascade, distinct from canonical TGF-β signaling. BMP downstream signaling is strongly induced within epidermal keratinocytes in cutaneous psoriatic lesions, and BMP7 instructs monocytic cells to acquire characteristics of psoriasis-associated Langerhans dendritic cells (DCs). Regulatory T (Treg)-cell numbers strongly increase during psoriatic skin inflammation and were recently shown to limit psoriatic skin inflammation.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare disease that is characterized by a localized or systemic proliferation of Langerhans dendritic cells and a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. We experienced an unusual case of occult Langerhans cell histiocytosis associated with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. A 62-year-old man underwent a partial nephrectomy for left renal mass.
