Planetary health education needs fresh approaches to engage learners and educators in positive visions and future planning to navigate the societal challenges of climate change. The human health impacts of the climate crisis, environmental degradation and pollution are far-reaching and compounding in nature. International leaders in healthcare are recognizing the time-pressured opportunity to mobilize and motivate colleagues to optimize health outcomes by addressing these issues.

Human health depends on planetary health, and yet healthcare provision can have unintended consequences for the health of the planet. Emissions from the healthcare sector include greenhouse gases, air pollution and plastic pollution, alongside chemical contamination. Chemical pollution resulting in endocrine disruption has been associated with plastics, which are a source of concerning additives such as phthalates, bisphenols, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and flame retardants (all routinely found in healthcare products).

RNA interference (RNAi) is a cellular mechanism regulating gene expression at a post-transcriptional level in eukaryotes. Suppression of vacuolar-ATPase B subunit (vATPase-B) expression resulted in lethality to the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, following oral administration of the gene-specific double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) for RNAi. This study aimed to enhance the insecticidal activity of sprayable dsRNA against the thrips.

Policies to implement climate-forcing pollution emission reductions have often been stymied by economic and political divisiveness. However, certain uncontested nonregret public health policies that also carry climate-forcing cobenefits with them could provide more achievable policy pathways to accelerate the implementation of climate mitigation. An International Society for Environmental Epidemiology Policy Committee endorsed pre-28th Conference of the Parties climate meeting workshop brought together experts on environment, diet, civic planning, and health to review current understanding of public health policy approaches that provide climate change mitigation cobenefits by also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
