Application of in situ X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Al K-edge provides unique insight into the flexibilty of the aluminum coordinations in zeolites as a function of treatment or during true reaction conditions. A unique, previously not observed, pre-edge feature is detected in zeolites H-Mordenite and steamed and unsteamed H-Beta at temperatures above 675 K. Spectra simulations using the full multiple scattering code Feff8 identify the unique pre-edge feature as three-coordinate aluminum. The amount of three-fold coordinated aluminum is a function of temperature and pretreatment of a zeolite: a steamed zeolite Beta contains more three-coordinate aluminum than an unsteamed sample. No clear differences between zeolites H-Mordenite and H-Beta were observed. Octahedrally coordinated aluminum forms in zeolites H-Mordenite and H-Beta at room temperature in a stream of wet helium. This octahedrally coordinated aluminum is unstable at temperatures higher than 395 K, where it quantitatively reverts to the tetrahedral coordination.

Aluminum-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are underexplored despite the broad applications of boron-containing PAHs in areas such as catalysis and optoelectronics. We disclose the donor-free, sterically unprotected 9-methyl-9-aluminafluorene (Me-AlFlu; 2), synthesized by heating a 9,9-dimethyl-9-stannafluorene and AlMe in hexanes. The compound is a dimer, (2), with -positioned Al substituents in the solid state.

The three-coordinate aluminum cations ligated by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) [(NHC) ⋅ AlMes ] [B(C F ) ] (NHC=IMe 4, IiPr 5, IiPr 6, Mes=2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) were prepared via hydride abstraction of the alanes (NHC) ⋅ AlHMes (NHC=IMe 1, IiPr 2, IiPr 3) using [Ph C] [B(C F ) ] in toluene as hydride acceptor. If this reaction was performed in diethyl ether, the corresponding four-coordinate aluminum etherate cations [(NHC) ⋅ AlMes (OEt )] [B(C F ) ] 7-9 (NHC=IMe 7, IiPr 8, IiPr 9) were isolated. According to a theoretical and experimental assessment of the Lewis-acidity of the [(IMe ) ⋅ AlMes ] cation is the acidity larger than that of B(C F ) and of similar magnitude as reported for Al(C F ) .

Herein, we report the synthesis, characterisation, and application of three aluminium alkyl complexes, [κ-{NHIP(Ph)NDipp}AlMe] (R = Dipp (2a), Mes (2b); Bu (2c), Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, Mes = mesityl, and Bu = -butyl), supported by unsymmetrical imino-phosphanamide [NHIP(Ph)NDipp] [R = Dipp (1a), Mes (1b), Bu (1c)] ligands as molecular precursors for the catalytic synthesis of guanidines using carbodiimides and primary amines. All the imino-phosphanamide ligands 1a, 1b and 1c were prepared in good yield from the corresponding N-heterocyclic imine (NHI) with phenylchloro-2,6-diisopropylphenylphosphanamine, PhP(Cl)NHDipp. The aluminium alkyl complexes 2a, 2b and 2c were obtained in good yield upon completion of the reaction between trimethyl aluminium and the protic ligands 1a, 1b and 1c in a 1 : 1 molar ratio in toluene the elimination of methane, respectively.

Insight into Three-Coordinate Aluminum Species on Ethanol-to-Olefin Conversion over ZSM-5 Zeolites.

Commercial bioethanol can be readily converted into ethylene by a dehydration process using solid acids, such as Brønsted acidic H-ZSM-5 zeolites, and thus, it is an ideal candidate to replace petroleum and coal for the sustainable production of ethylene. Now, strong Lewis acidic extra-framework three-coordinate Al species were introduced into H-ZSM-5 zeolites to improve their catalytic activity. Remarkably, Al species working with Brønsted acid sites can accelerate ethanol dehydration at a much lower reaction temperature and shorten the unsteady-state period within 1-2 h, compared to >9 h for those without Al species, which can significantly enhance the ethanol dehydration efficiency and reduce the cost.

New three-coordinate and electronically unsaturated aluminum hydride [LAlH] [HB(C F ) ] (LH=[{(2,6-iPr C H N)P(Ph )} N]H) and aluminum methyl [LAlMe] [MeB(C F ) ] cations have been prepared. The quantitative estimation of Lewis acidity by Gutmann-Beckett method revealed [LAlH] [HB(C F ) ] to be better Lewis acid than B(C F ) and AlCl making these compounds ideal catalysts for Lewis acid-mediated reactions. To highlight that the work is of fundamental importance, catalytic hydroboration of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes and ketones have been demonstrated.
