Asthma is a common complex disease with susceptibility defined through an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Responsiveness to asthma treatment varies between individuals and is largely determined by genetic variability. The polygenic score (PGS) approach enables an individual risk of asthma and respective response to drug therapy.

Colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer globally, causes over 900,000 deaths annually. Although vitamin D is observed to have potential anti-carcinogenic properties, research findings on its preventable effect against colorectal cancer remain inconclusive. Notably, different subsites within the colon and rectum may be associated with distinct risk factors.

Population genomics advances in frontier ethnic minorities in China.

Sci China Life Sci

December 2024

Center for Evolutionary Biology, School of Life Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200438, China.

China, with its large geographic span, possesses rich genetic diversity across vast frontier regions in addition to the Han Chinese majority. Importantly, demographic events and various natural and cultural environments in Chinese frontier regions have shaped the genomic diversity of ethnic minorities via local adaptations. Thus, insights into the genetic diversity and adaptive evolution of these under-represented ethnic groups are crucial for understanding evolutionary scenarios and biomedical implications in East Asian populations.

Post-genomic illumination of paclitaxel biosynthesis.

Nat Plants

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Seed Innovation, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * Currently, paclitaxel is produced through a semi-synthesis process, using a compound called baccatin III extracted from Taxus plants, although many biosynthesis intermediates remain unknown.
  • * Recent genomic studies have identified key genes for baccatin III and paclitaxel biosynthesis, which could lead to advancements in understanding the full biosynthetic pathway and improving industrial production through synthetic biology, despite ongoing significant challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • Varicocele is a leading cause of male infertility, and while microsurgical varicocelectomy can improve sperm quality, many men with the condition are not infertile and spontaneous pregnancies post-surgery can vary significantly.
  • Advances in proteomic analysis are being explored for diagnosing male infertility, focusing on seminal plasma proteins which play a crucial role in fertilization.
  • The complexity of varicocele as a disease suggests that using post-genomic technologies could enhance understanding of the factors affecting sperm production and improve predictions of treatment success.
