AI-assisted Total Body Dermoscopic Evaluation of Changes in Melanocytic Nevi during Pregnancy: A Prospective, Comparative Study of 2,799 Nevi.

Acta Derm Venereol

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, University Hospital of Basel, Basel, Switzerland; Department of Dermatology, University Hospital of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland; Faculty of Medicine, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Pregnancy-associated changes in melanocytic nevi (MN), apart from size increase on the trunk, remain a topic of debate. We conducted the first prospective study to investigate dermoscopic changes in MN comparing pregnant with non-pregnant women on all body parts using a market-approved convolutional neural network (CNN). We included 25 pregnant and 25 non-pregnant women from Basel, Switzerland, who underwent standard skin cancer screenings and whose MN > 2 mm were digitally recorded and analysed by a CNN.

Objective Permanent teeth roots undergo resorption under pathologic conditions such as trauma, orthodontic treatment, pulpal infections, periodontitis, and periodontal therapy. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of external root resorption (ERR) in patients with periodontitis as seen in orthopantomography (OPGs). Methodology This single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional radiographic study was conducted from January 2021 to December 2022, including 656 orthopantomographs (OPGs) from patients with periodontitis.

Diagnostic errors pose a significant public health challenge, affecting nearly 800,000 Americans annually, with even higher rates globally. In the ICU, these errors are particularly prevalent, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality. The clinical reasoning process aims to reduce diagnostic uncertainty and establish a plausible differential diagnosis but is often hindered by cognitive load, patient complexity, and clinician burnout.

Prognostic factors and impact of management strategies for status epilepticus: The STEPPER study in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy.

Epilepsia

December 2024

IRCCS Istituto Delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, full member of the European Reference Network for Rare and Complex Epilepsies (EpiCARE), Bologna, Italy.

Objective: The STEPPER (Status Epilepticus in Emilia-Romagna) study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, prognostic factors, and treatment approaches of status epilepticus (SE) in adults of the Emilia-Romagna region (ERR), Northern Italy.

Methods: STEPPER, an observational, prospective, multicentric cohort study, was conducted across neurology units, emergency departments, and intensive care units of the ERR over 24 months (October 2019-October 2021), encompassing incident cases of SE. Patients were followed up for 30 days.

Using first principles calculations we investigate cobalt-coordinated tetracyanoquinodimethane (R-CoTCNQ) as a potential catalyst for the CO electroreduction reaction (COERR). We determine that exchange-correlation functionals beyond the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are required to accurately describe the spin properties of R-CoTCNQ, therefore, the meta-GGA rSCAN functional is used in this study. The free energy COERR reaction pathways are calculated for the reduced catalyst ([R-CoTCNQ]) with reaction products HCOOH and HCHO predicted depending on our choice of electrode potential.
