The in vitro activity of 20 dicationic molecules containing either diguanidino or reversed amidine cationic groups were evaluated versus Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania donovani. The most active compounds were in the reversed amidine series and six exhibited IC(50) values of less than 1 micro mol versus T. cruzi and five gave similar values versus L. donovani.

Background: Chagas disease (CD), a Neglected Tropical Disease caused by , affects millions of people in Latin America and the southern US and spreads worldwide. CD results from close interactions between humans, animals, and vectors, influenced by sociodemographic factors and housing materials.
Methods: This study aimed to evaluate how these factors, along with seasonal changes, affect the distribution of CD vectors in an endemic community near Puebla, Mexico, using a cross-sectional survey.

Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909) is a protozoan parasite transmitted by triatomine (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) insects and is the causative agent of Chagas disease. Oral transmission of the parasite occurs through consumption of contaminated food or infected triatomines and may depend on the degree to which T. cruzi survives in triatomine abdomens.

is a human and animal pathogen that depends on flagellar motility for transmission and infection. The trypanosome flagellum is built around a canonical "9+2" axoneme, containing nine doublet microtubules (DMTs) surrounding two singlet microtubules. Each DMT contains a 13-protofilament A-tubule and a 10-protofilament B-tubule, connected to the A-tubule by a conserved, non-tubulin inner junction (IJ) filament made up of alternating PACRG and FAP20 subunits.

Initial studies using bioinformatics analysis revealed DNA sequence similarities between Trypanosoma cruzi GenBank® M21331, coding for Antigen 36 (Ag 36), and tripartite motif (TRIM) genes. TRIM40 showed 9.7% identity to GenBank M21331, and four additional TRIM genes had identities greater than 5.
