Article Abstract

In this paper we are concerned with the dynamics of noninvertible transformations of the plane. Three examples are explored and possibly a new bifurcation, or "eruption," is described. A fundamental role is played by the interactions of fixed points and singular curves. Other critical elements in the phase space include periodic points and an invariant line. The dynamics along the invariant line, in two of the examples, reduces to the one-dimensional Newton's method which is conjugate to a degree two rational map. We also determine, computationally, the characteristic exponents for all of the systems. An unexpected coincidence is that the parameter range where the invariant line becomes neutrally stable, as measured by a zero Lyapunov exponent, coincides with the merging of a periodic point with a point on a singular curve. Many modern cryptographic primitives for hashing and (authenticated) encryption make use of constructions that are instantiated with an iterated cryptographic permutation that operates on a fixed-width state consisting of an array of bits. Often, such permutations are the repeated application of a relatively simple round function consisting of a linear layer and a non-linear layer. These constructions do not require that the underlying function is a permutation and they can plausibly be based on a non-invertible transformation.

Exact Excited-State Functionals of the Asymmetric Hubbard Dimer.

J Phys Chem Lett

The exact functionals associated with the (singlet) ground state and the two singlet excited states of the asymmetric Hubbard dimer at half-filling are calculated using both Levy's constrained search and Lieb's convex formulation. While the ground-state functional is, as is commonly known, a convex function with respect to the density, the functional associated with the doubly excited state is found to be concave. Also, because the density-potential mapping associated with the first excited state is noninvertible, its "functional" is a partial, multivalued function composed of one concave and one convex branch that correspond to two separate domains of the external potential.

Glare and visual discomfort are important factors that should be taken into account in illumination design. Conventional freeform lenses offer perfect control over the outgoing intensity distribution, thereby allowing optical radiation patterns with sharp cut-offs in order to optimize the unified glare rating index. However, these freeform lenses do not offer control over the near-field luminance distribution.

Rhythmic activities of the brain: Quantifying the high complexity of beta and gamma oscillations during visuomotor tasks.

IFLYSIB, CONICET & Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Calle 59-789, 1900 La Plata, Argentina.

Electroencephalography (EEG) signals depict the electrical activity that takes place at the surface of the brain and provide an important tool for understanding a variety of cognitive processes. The EEG is the product of synchronized activity of the brain, and variations in EEG oscillations patterns reflect the underlying changes in neuronal synchrony. Our aim is to characterize the complexity of the EEG rhythmic oscillations bands when the subjects perform a visuomotor or imagined cognitive tasks (imagined movement), providing a causal mapping of the dynamical rhythmic activities of the brain as a measure of attentional investment.

Image completion by diffusion maps and spectral relaxation.

We present a framework for image inpainting that utilizes the diffusion framework approach to spectral dimensionality reduction. We show that on formulating the inpainting problem in the embedding domain, the domain to be inpainted is smoother in general, particularly for the textured images. Thus, the textured images can be inpainted through simple exemplar-based and variational methods.
