We first briefly review the subject of spatiotemporal pattern formation on microdesigned composite catalysts. One of the most significant interaction mechanisms between different reacting domains (consisting of different metal catalysts such as Pt and Rh, coupled through surface diffusion) is the initiation of reaction fronts at the interface between them. We then explore in some detail the effect of two-dimensional composite geometry on this basic building block of composite catalyst dynamics. (c) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

This work is strategically premeditated to study the potential of a herbal medicinal product as a natural bioactive ingredient to generate nanocellulose-based antibacterial architectures. In situ fibrillation of purified cellulose was done in cinnamon extract (E) to obtain microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). To this MFC suspension, carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (cCNCs) were homogeneously mixed and the viscous gel thus obtained was freeze-dried to obtain lightweight and flexible composite aerogel architectures impregnated with E, namely, MFC/cCNCs.

The effect of superposed transitions in actuators with layered shape memory alloy (SMA) films undergoing martensitic phase transformation is analyzed in terms of a model developed for two layers of different composition, deposited at the same temperature on a substrate. A significant difference is observed in the actuation versus temperature relationship, depending on the thermal and elastic properties of the SMA layers and their martensitic transformation temperature. The prediction of the actuation is exemplified using a multilayer model and is verified for a cantilever actuator with NiTi and NiMnGa layers deposited on a Si substrate.

We study the effect of microdesigned composite geometries on pattern formation during the catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt-Ti, Pt-Rh, and Pt-Pd composite catalysts. In particular, we find experimentally (and rationalize through modeling) that adsorbate surface transport through the second (active) component drastically affects the shapes and interactions of concentration patterns (traveling pulses) observed on pure Pt.
