Published: June 2003

Objective: To investigate the correlation between the polymorphism of dopamine beta hydroxylase(DBH) gene and the susceptibility of Shanghai Chinese Han population to Parkinson's disease(PD).

Methods: Association study was performed in 144 PD patients and 188 healthy control subjects matched for age, sex and origin. Polymorphism of DBH gene was analyzed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.

Results: The allelic frequency of A2 allele of DBH gene was significantly higher in PD patients than in controls(P<0.01).The risk of suffering from PD increased (OR=1.82) in the individual with A2 allele. And the genotypic frequency of A2/A2 was significantly higher in PD patients(OR=2.11, P<0.01),too. On the other hand, the allelic frequency of A1 allele and the genotypic frequency of A1/A2 genotype of DBH gene in PD patients were significantly lower(A1 alleles: OR=0.54, P<0.01; A1/A2 genotypes: OR=0.45, P<0.01).

Conclusion: The polymorphism in DBH gene might play an important role in the susceptibility of Shanghai Chinese Han population to PD.

Introduction: Genetic studies of smoking cessation have been limited by short-term follow-up or cross-sectional design. Within seven genes (CHRNA3, CHRNA5, CHRNB2, CHRNB4, DRD2, DBH and CYP2A6) influencing biological mechanisms relevant to smoking, this study aimed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with smoking cessation throughout up to 38-years of follow-up.

Methods: Participants were from two all-female cohort studies, Nurses' Health Study (NHS) (n = 10,017) and NHS-2 (n = 2,793).

Dopaminergic Epistases in Schizophrenia.

Brain Sci

October 2024

Department of Microscopic Morphology, Discipline of Genetics, Genomic Medicine Centre, "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 2 Eftimie Murgu Square, 300041 Timisoara, Romania.

The dopaminergic theory, the oldest and most comprehensively analyzed neurotransmitter theory of schizophrenia, remains a focal point of research. This systematic review examines the association between combinations of 14 dopaminergic genes and the risk of schizophrenia. The selected genes include dopamine receptors (DRD1-5), metabolizing enzymes (COMT, MAOA, MAOB, DBH), synthesizing enzymes (TH, DDC), and dopamine transporters (DAT, VMAT1, and VMAT2).

A novel prognostic model based on telomere-related lncRNAs in gastric cancer.

Transl Cancer Res

September 2024

Department of General Surgery, The Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Soochow University, Suzhou, China.

Background: Telomeres are specialized structures at the ends of chromosomes that are important for their protection. Over time, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have gradually come into the spotlight as essential biomarkers of proliferation, migration, and invasion of human malignant tumors. Nevertheless, the impact of telomere-related lncRNAs (TRLs) in gastric cancer is currently unknown.

Lysosomal diseases (LDs) are a heterogeneous group of rare genetic disorders that result in impaired lysosomal function, leading to progressive multiorgan system dysfunction. Accurate diagnosis is paramount to initiating targeted therapies early in the disease process in addition to providing prognostic information and appropriate support for families. In recent years, genomic sequencing technologies have become the first-line approach in the diagnosis of LDs.
