The paper deals with historical information concerning the investigation of mycotoxins and mycotoxicoses at the Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the NAS of Ukraine, main results of the works fulfilled for the last 25 years and possible trends of further investigations.

Background: Tenuazonic acid (TeA), a mycotoxin produced by Alternaria alternata, contaminates various food commodities and is known to cause acute and chronic health effects. However, the lack of human toxicokinetic (TK) data and the reliance on external exposure estimates have stalled a comprehensive risk assessment for TeA.
Objective: To bridge this gap, a human TK trial and population-based TK (PopTK) modeling were applied to determine human TK parameters of TeA, and the results were applied for risk screening using population biomonitoring data and threshold of toxicological concern (TTC)-based approaches.

Food contamination with mycotoxin-producing fungi increases the risk of many diseases, including neurological diseases closely related to the neurotoxicity of these toxins. Based on the latest literature data, we presented the association of common mycotoxins with neurological diseases. Articles from 2001 to 2024 were analyzed.

Research Background: The use of plant extracts in the biological control of fungal plant diseases can reduce the use of fungicides and residues in food by effectively suppressing mycotoxigenic microorganisms. The focus of interest is therefore finding plant extracts that have antifungal properties and are not toxic to organisms, so that they can be used for the biological control of economically important phytopathogenic fungi such as . Species of the genus are considered economically important pathogenic fungi of numerous agricultural crops, which not only cause significant losses but also produce mycotoxins that reach consumers through food.

Background: Mycotoxin, a secondary metabolite of fungus, found worldwide and concerning in crops and food, causes multiple acute and chronic toxicities. Its toxic profile includes hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, estrogenicity, immunotoxicity, and neurotoxicity, leading to deleterious impact on human and animal health. Emerging evidence suggests that it adversely affects perinatal health and progeny by its ability to cross placental barriers.
