Degranulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) occurs during extracorporeal circulation. A degranulation-inhibiting protein identical to angiogenin was recently isolated from high-flux dialyzer ultrafiltrate. This protein inhibits the release of lactoferrin and metalloproteinases from PMNL in vitro.
