The stabilization of the P(CF(3))(2)(-) ion by intermediary coordination to the very weak Lewis acid acetone gives access to single crystals of [18-crown-6-K]P(CF(3))(2). The X-ray single crystal analysis exhibits nearly isolated P(CF(3))(2)(-) ions with an unusually short P-C distance of 184(1) pm, which can be explained by negative hyperconjugation and is also found by quantum chemical hybrid DFT calculation. Coordination of the P(CF(3))(2)(-) ion to pentacarbonyl tungsten has only a minor effect on electronic and geometric properties of the P(CF(3))(2) moiety, while a strong increase in thermal stability of the dissolved species is achieved. The hitherto unknown P(C(6)F(5))(2)(-) ion is stabilized by coordination to pentacarbonyl tungsten and isolated as a stable 18-crown-6 potassium salt, [18-crown-6-K][W[P(C(6)F(5))(2)](CO)(5)], which is fully characterized. The tungstate, [W[P(C(6)F(5))(2)](CO)(5)](-), decomposes slowly in solution, while coordination of the phosphorus atom to a second pentacarbonyl tungsten moiety results in an enhanced thermal stability in solution. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of [18-crown-6-K][[W(CO)(5)](2)[mu-P(C(6)F(5))(2)]].THF exhibits a very tight arrangement of the two C(6)F(5) and two W(CO)(5) groups around the central phosphorus atom. NMR spectroscopic investigations of the [[W(CO)(5)](2)[mu-P(C(6)F(5))(2)]](-) ion exhibit a hindered rotation of both the C(6)F(5) and W(CO)(5) groups in solution.

The characterization of electrical double layers is important since the interfacial electric field and electrolyte environment directly affect the reaction mechanisms and catalytic rates of electrochemical processes. In this work, we introduce a spectroscopic method based on a Stark shift ruler that enables mapping the electric field strength across the electric double layer of electrode/electrolyte interfaces. We use the tungsten-pentacarbonyl(1,4-phenelenediisocyanide) complex attached to the gold surface as a molecular ruler.

Organometallic complexes including metal carbonyls have been widely utilized in academic and industrial settings for purposes ranging from teaching basic catalytic reactions to developing state-of-the-art electronic circuits. Characterization of these materials can be obtained via steady-state measurements; however, the intermediate photochemical events remain unclear, hindering effective and rational molecular engineering methods for new materials. We employed femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) and ground-state femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) on triphenylbismuth-tungsten pentacarbonyl complex, a solution precursor for bimetallic oxide thin films.

Glutaryl and adipoyl chlorides undergo facile condensation with the bis(silyl)phosphanes RP(SiMe) (R = Me, Bu, Bu, Ph, Mes) to afford exclusively the phosphacycloalkyldiones (CH)(C[double bond, length as m-dash]O)PR (n = 3, 4). Characterised spectroscopically and, for R = Ph, Mes (n = 3) crystallographically, the macrocycles are conformationally fluxional in solution and appreciably moisture sensitive. Though seemingly resistant to chemical oxidation at phosphorus, coordination is readily achieved, as illustrated by isolation of trans-[Pt(PEt){P(Ph)(CO)(CH)}Cl] and a series of tungsten pentacarbonyl complexes, which are characterised crystallographically and by infrared and NMR spectroscopy.

The Chemistry of 1-Acylphosphirane Complexes: A Phosphorus Analogue of the Cloke-Wilson Rearrangement.

The stabilization of a phosphirane ring by complexation to tungsten pentacarbonyl allows the emergence of the Cloke-Wilson rearrangement in 1-acylphosphirane complexes around 130 °C. Contrary to the cyclopropane case, this transformation of the 1-acylphosphirane to the 1,3-oxaphosphol-3-ene complexes is reversible. It is favored by a 2-phenyl, and even a 2-vinyl substitution.

Monitoring Photochemical Reaction Pathways of Tungsten Hexacarbonyl in Solution from Femtoseconds to Minutes.

J Phys Chem B

December 2016

Metal-organic complexes are widely used across disciplines for energy and biological applications, however, their photophysical and photochemical reaction coordinates remain unclear in solution due to pertaining molecular motions on ultrafast time scales. In this study, we apply transient absorption and tunable femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) to investigate the UV photolysis of tungsten hexacarbonyl and subsequent solvent binding events. On the macroscopic time scale with UV lamp irradiation, no equilibrated intermediate is observed from W(CO) to W(CO)(solvent), corroborated by vibrational normal mode calculations.
