The unique behavior of a new Ru(II) diimine complex, Ru(bpy)(2)(L)(2+) (where L is 4-methyl-4'-[p-(dimethyl- amino)-alpha-styryl]-2,2'-bipyridine, bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine), was studied in detail. Due to the strong electron donating property of the amino group, an ILCT (intraligand charge transfer) state is involved either in the absorption spectra or in the time-resolved emission spectra. Dual emission based on (3)MLCT and (3)ILCT states was observed at room temperature for the first time via a time-resolved technique in Ru(II) diimine complexes.

This study investigates the effects of Pt and Ru complexes containing a Schiff base with a diimine structure on Alzheimer's disease. The Schiff base (N1E,N2E)-N1,N2-bis(isoquinolin-4-ylmethylene)benzene-1,2-diamine (I) and the novel Pt(II) and Ru(II) complexes (Ia and Ib) were synthesized and characterized using FTIR, NMR (H, C), mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. Their ability to inhibit amyloid beta (Aβ) aggregation was determined in vitro using the SH-SY5Y cell line.

We have developed photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic substrates using O as a terminal oxidant to afford only 2e-oxidized products without the reductive activation of O in acidic water under visible-light irradiation. A Ru complex () bearing a pyrazine moiety as the active site in tetrapyrido[3,2-:2',3'-:3″,2″-:2‴,3‴-]phenazine (tpphz) as a ligand was employed as a photocatalyst. The active species for the photocatalysis was revealed to be not complex itself but the protonated form, -H, protonated at the vacant diimine site of tpphz.

The versatile and tunable ligand-exchange dynamics in ruthenium(II)-polypyridyl complexes imposed by the modulation of the steric and electronic effects of the coordinated ligands provide an unlimited scope for developing phototherapeutic agents. The photorelease of a bidentate ligand from the Ru-center is better suited for potent Ru(II)-based photocytotoxic agents with two available labile sites for cross-linking with biological targets augmented with possible phototriggered O generation. Herein, we introduced a phenyl-terpyridine (ptpy) ligand in the octahedral Ru(II) core of [Ru(ptpy)(L-L)Cl] to induce structural distortion for the possible photorelease of electronically distinct bidentate ligands (L-L).

Ruthenium(II) complexes containing diimine ligands have contributed to the development of agents for photoactivated chemotherapy. Several approaches have been used to obtain photolabile Ru(II) complexes. The two most explored have been the use of monodentate ligands and the incorporation of steric effects between the bidentate ligands and the Ru(II).

Metal-free carbazole-thiophene photosensitizers designed for a dye-sensitized H2-evolving photocatalyst in Z-scheme water splitting.

Dye-sensitized photocatalysts with molecular dyes and widegap semiconductors have attracted attention because of their design flexibility, for example, tunable light absorption for visible-light water splitting. Although organic dyes are promising candidates as metal-free photosensitizers in dye-sensitized photocatalysts, their efficiency in H2 production has far been unsatisfactory compared to that of metal-complex photosensitizers, such as Ru(II) tris-diimine-type complexes. Here, we demonstrate the substantial improvement of carbazole-thiophene-based dyes used for dye-sensitized photocatalysts through systematic molecular design of the number of thiophene rings, substituents in the thiophene moiety, and the anchoring group.
