Understanding the spatial fishing activity distribution characteristics is important for the sustainable development of fisheries. Spatial nonstationarity is always present, especially in marine ecosystems. To explore how marine environmental factors affect the fishing effort of tuna purse seine vessels, data from 2015 to 2020 on the fishing activities of these fleets and environmental variables in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) were analyzed.

While placozoans are typically found as part of the epibenthos of coastal waters, known placozoan predators, namely small, shell-less sea slugs belonging to the family Rhodopidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Heterobranchia), inhabit the interstitium of seafloor sediment. In order to gain further insights into this predator-prey relationship and to expand our understanding of placozoan ecological niches, we screened publicly available whole-body metagenomic data from two rhodopid specimens collected from coastal sediments.

The benthic biome of the deep-sea floor, one of the largest biomes on Earth, is dominated by diverse and highly productive heterotrophic protists, second only to prokaryotes in terms of biomass. Recent evidence suggests that these protists play a significant role in ocean biogeochemistry, representing an untapped source of knowledge. DNA metabarcoding and environmental sample sequencing have revealed that deep-sea abyssal protists exhibit high levels of specificity and diversity across local regions.

Background: Leakages of cold, methane-rich fluids from subsurface reservoirs to the sea floor are termed cold seeps. Recent exploration of the deep sea has shed new light on the microbial communities in cold seeps. However, conventional metagenomic methods largely rely on reference databases and neglect the phylogeny of functional genes.

An important factor dictating coral fitness is the quality of bacteria associated with corals and coral reefs. One way that bacteria benefit corals is by stimulating the larval to juvenile life cycle transition of settlement and metamorphosis. Tetrabromopyrrole (TBP) is a small molecule produced by bacteria that stimulates metamorphosis with and without attachment in a range of coral species.
