Synthesis and crystal structure of a new compound, BaCuZn(3)As(3), are reported. Single crystals of BaCuZn(3)As(3) are synthesized via NaCl/KCl flux reaction in a sealed fused silica ampule. Its elemental composition has been determined to be Ba/Cu/Zn/As = 1.03(4):1(0):2.91(6):2.98(3), suggesting BaCuZn(3)As(3) as the chemical formula. The structure of BaCuZn(3)As(3) has been determined by X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group with a = 4.2277(3) A, b = 12.970(1) A, and c = 12.011(1) A at T = 90.7 K, and it exhibits a columnar structure along the a-axis. This structure is isotypic to beta-BaCu(4)S(3) but highly distorted. beta-BaCu(4)S(3) is considered to be a layered structure whereas BaCuZn(3)As(3) is a three-dimensional network.

Wastewater treatment plants produce high quantities of excess sludge. However, traditional sludge dewatering technology has high energy consumption and occupies a large area. Dead-end forward osmosis (DEFO) is an efficient and energy-saving deep dewatering technology for sludge.

Hyperosmolar aerosols appear to promote or suppress upper airway dysfunction caused by dehydration in a composition-dependent manner. We sought to explore this composition dependence experimentally, in an interventional human clinical study, and theoretically, by numerical analysis of upper airway ion and water transport. In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study, phonation threshold pressure (PTP) was measured prenasal and postnasal inhalation of hypertonic aerosols of NaCl, KCl, CaCl, and MgCl in seven human subjects.

A substantial amount of water is being used during Clean-in-Place (CIP) operation, and is transformed into wastewater that can cause eutrophication to the nearby ecosystem. The present study proposed the Nanofiltration (NF) - Forward Osmosis (FO) - Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) to recover the cleaning agents and reclaim freshwater from the model CIP wastewater. NF steps were suggested as prefiltration steps to remove organic compounds from the CIP wastewater.

Polycrystalline samples of the magnesium-rich intermetallic compounds RECuMg (RE = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) were synthesized by reaction of the elements in sealed tantalum ampoules heated in a high-frequency induction furnace. Phase purity of the RECuMg phases was ascertained by powder X-ray diffraction patterns. Well-shaped single crystals of HoCuMg could be grown in a NaCl/KCl salt flux and the crystal structure was refined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data: TbCuMg structure-type, space group , = 1361.

In order to improve the stability of nanofiltration membrane in separation and purification, a novel polyelectrolyte multilayer nanofiltration membrane was facilely prepared by co-deposition of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on the polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane substrate, followed by immersing graphene oxide (GO) solution, and crosslinking PDA. The modified surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle, their saline flux and ability to reject salt and dye were determined. The results also exhibited salt rejection ability as NaSO > KSO > MgSO > NaCl > KCl > MgCl, suggesting the higher rejection of divalent anion.
