The ability of a fluconazole-containing agar screen assay to accurately detect isolates of Candida glabrata resistant to the azole antifungal agent fluconazole was evaluated on a collection of 100 clinical isolates of this organism. Results were correlated with the MIC of fluconazole for these isolates and compared with the results of a previously published disk diffusion-based fluconazole resistance screening test. Agar screen assay results were in categorical agreement with MIC-based determinations for 97% (97/100) of the isolates tested. This correlation was higher than that obtained with the disk diffusion technique, which categorized only 87% (87/100) of isolates correctly, and suggests that the agar screening approach can effectively expedite fluconazole susceptibility testing of C. glabrata isolates.

Background: Phaeohyphomycosis is a very rare fungal infection, which is one of more usual complications in immunocompromised and/or traumatic patients, has never been reported especially in a cytological field. We describe a first case of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala xenobiotica (E. xenobiotica) in a poorly controlled diabetic patient, and in which a correct cytological diagnosis of phaeohyphomycosis was possible to conclude.

In the present study, we used phenotypic and molecular methods to determine susceptibility to oxacillin in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) and estimate the prevalence of strains with low-level resistance to oxacillin, A-positive oxacillin-susceptible methicillin-resistant (OS-MRCoNS), and borderline oxacillin-resistant (BORCoNS). One hundred one CoNS strains were screened for oxacillin and cefoxitin susceptibility using phenotypic (disk diffusion, agar dilution, latex agglutination, and chromagar) and molecular (detection of A, B, and C) methods. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) typing was performed.

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the urgent need for alternative treatments such as bacteriophage (phage) therapy. Phage therapy offers a targeted approach to combat bacterial infections, particularly those resistant to conventional antibiotics. This study aimed to standardize an agar plate method for high-mix, low-volume phage production, suitable for personalized phage therapy.

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using cyanobacteria has gained significant attention due to its cost-effective and eco-friendly advantages in green synthesis. Additionally, biogenic AgNPs show great potential for biological applications, particularly in combating infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria and fungi. This study synthesized using the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria salina (Os-AgNPs).

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) can lead to multiple complications when it occurs during pregnancy, so it is necessary to diagnose it promptly for effective treatment. Traditional methods for identifying spp. are often too time-consuming and have limited specificity and sensitivity.
