The behaviour of Ixodes ricinus nymphs was recorded in 10-day experiments using computer-assisted video-tracking, in the absence of any host stimuli. These ticks switch spontaneously from questing in a desiccating atmosphere to quiescence in a water-saturated atmosphere after dark. Quantification of both questing and quiescence duration demonstrates that questing duration is inversely related to saturation deficit whereas quiescence duration is not. Distance walked after quiescence increased with desiccating conditions, while the distance walked after questing remained unchanged. Almost all locomotor activities of I. ricinus occurred during darkness under either a 14 h:10 h L:D or a 8 h:4 h L:D cycle. We established that all life stages of I. ricinus are equipped to sense shifts in light intensity with bilaterally placed strings of photoreceptors. This permits I. ricinus to use onset of darkness to trigger mobility when desiccation risk is reduced in nature.

Importance: A vaginal pessary is a highly effective treatment for patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Patient views of pessaries and how their beliefs affect whether they choose pessary treatment is unknown.
Objective: Our objective of this study was to describe the knowledge, understanding, and patient concerns regarding pessary use for POP management.

Background: Amalgamation of metal-tolerant plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) with biochar is a promising direction for the development of chemical-free biofertilizers that can mitigate environmental risks, enhance crop productivity and their biological value. The main objective of the work includes the evaluation of the influence of prepared bacterial biofertilizer (BF) on biometric growth parameters as well as physiological and biochemical characteristics of rapeseed ( L.) at copper action.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia in the perioperative setting is treated predominantly with intravenous iron formulation, of which ferric carboxymaltose may induce hypophosphatemia by modulating fibroblast growth factor 23.
Methods: In this single-center, prospective, randomized, double-blind trial, we consented 92 adult patients scheduled for elective major abdominal or thoracic surgery. These patients either had isolated iron deficiency (plasma ferritin <100 ng/mL or transferrin saturation < 20 %) or iron deficiency anemia (hemoglobin (Hb) 100-130 g/L with plasma ferritin <100 ng/mL or transferrin saturation < 20 %).

The relationships between photosynthesis and initial water deficit stress were investigated by chlorophyll fluorescence analysis in Pulmonaria vallarsae, a shade tolerant, perennial C3 herb by following changes of light response curves (LRCs) in single leaves during water shortage. We devised an LRC model based on two interacting rectangular hyperbolae (DH model) for the low (H1) and the high irradiance regions (H2), characterized by two parameters: maximum extrapolated ETR (V1, V2) and half-saturation irradiance (K1, K2). While H1 is assumed to represent an ETR-related function, H2 may reflect Rubisco activity.

Salinity inhibits the uptake of nitrogen, which slows down the growth and prevents plant reproduction. Certain ions, especially chloride, are poisonous to plants; when their concentration increases, the plant becomes poisoned and eventually perishes. The adaptability of several table beet cultivars ( L.
