We assayed European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, hemocyte parameters, circulating and tissue-infiltrating hemocyte densities, circulating hemocyte type distribution and lysosomal enzyme contents, to possibly relate these hematological parameters to Bonamia ostreae infection. Circulating hemocyte densities were not statistically different between infected and uninfected oysters. In contrast, the number of tissue-infiltrating hemocytes increased with infection intensity suggesting a recruitment process at the site of infection and a possibility for cells to migrate from circulatory system to connective tissues. Lysosomal enzymes were localized mainly in granulocytes both infected and uninfected, and mean of alpha-naphtyl butyrate esterase activity decreased with increasing B. ostreae infection level. The main response observed was a change in hemocyte type distribution between uninfected and infected oysters and greater tissue-infiltrating hemocytes with increased infections. These results suggest that the decrease of circulating granulocytes, and, consequently of some cell enzyme activities may be related with B. ostreae infection.

Background: With the surge of COVID-19 infections, there were concerns about shortage of mechanical ventilator in several countries including the Philippines.
Objective: To transform a locally made, low-cost, neonatal ventilator into a volume- and pressure-controlled, adult ventilator and to determine its safe use among ventilated, adult patients at the Philippine General Hospital.
Methods: The modification of the neonatal ventilator (OstreaVent1) to the adult OstreaVent2 was based on the critical need for adult ventilators, in volume or pressure mode, in the Philippines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Polichete worms of the genus are considered very destructive for oysters, excavating channels in their shell and inducing oysters to create mud blisters in response to the irritation, interfering with their physiology and ethology. The parasite also causes important economic damage for oyster farmers, as products with a high degree of infestation cannot be commercialized. The present study aims to evaluate whether two non-invasive advanced diagnostic techniques, computed tomography scans (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are suitable to show the alterations induced by this parasite on live and oyster broodstocks.

Noroviruses, the major cause of acute viral gastroenteritis, are known to bind to histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs), including ABH groups and Lewis-type epitopes, which decorate the surface of erythrocytes and epithelial cells of their host tissues. The biosynthesis of these antigens is controlled by several glycosyltransferases, the distribution and expression of which varies between tissues and individuals. The use of HBGAs as ligands by viruses is not limited to humans, as many animal species, including oysters, which synthesize similar glycan epitopes that act as a gateway for viruses, become vectors for viral infection in humans.
