We report the characterization of Xenophilus aerolatus strain identified from a screening rectal swab specimen in human, initially misidentified as Brucella spp. by MALDI-TOF MS (VITEK-MS system). The strain is able to growth on Colorex mSuperCARBA plate, suggesting carbapenem resistance.

We describe a case of brucellosis in a man in his 20s, who presented to the emergency department with a 1-month history of fevers, dry cough and knee pain. Blood cultures were positive after 55 hours and was identified on matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. spp are Gram-negative organisms that are phylogenetically related to spp but commercially available MALDI-TOF libraries cannot distinguish between the two genera.

Background: It is challenging to diagnose brucellosis in nonendemic regions because it is a nonspecific febrile disease. The accurate identification of Brucella spp. in clinical microbiology laboratories (CMLs) continues to pose difficulties.

A 29-year-old Brazilian illegal gold miner developed intermittent fever. Blood cultures were positive for Gram-negative coccobacilli and, after an initial misidentification by an automated identification system, the diagnosis of brucellosis caused by Brucella suis was confirmed. We hypothesize an association with domestic or wild swine exposure.
