Purpose/objectives: To review standard and investigational treatments in advanced renal cell carcinoma, with a focus on thalidomide.

Data Sources: Published articles, conference proceedings, treatment guidelines, and textbooks.

Data Synthesis: The prognosis for advanced renal cell carcinoma when treated with standard regimens is poor; therefore, new treatments are needed.

Conclusions: Treatment with thalidomide, alone and in combination with other therapies, may improve survival for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.

Implications For Nursing: Proactive management of adverse effects associated with thalidomide, alone and in combination, may increase patient tolerance and compliance.

Update on Hepatorenal Syndrome: From Pathophysiology to Treatment.

Annu Rev Med

January 2025

Division of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases, Department of Medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA; email:

Hepatorenal syndrome-acute kidney injury (HRS-AKI) occurs in the setting of advanced chronic liver disease, portal hypertension, and ascites. HRS-AKI is found in ∼20% of patients presenting to the hospital with AKI, but it may coexist with other causes of AKI and/or with preexisting chronic kidney disease, thereby making the diagnosis challenging. Novel biomarkers such as urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin may be useful.

Diabetes nephropathy (DN) is a severe diabetic chronic microvascular complication and the major cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Our study aimed to investigate the effects of isoliquiritigenin (ISL) a natural flavonoid compound on DN and to explore the underlying mechanisms. The db/db mice were received intragastric treatments of ISL (5, 10, or 20 mg/kg), vehicle or positive drug metformin (300 mg/kg) once a day for 12 weeks, and the db/m mice treated with vehicle were used as controls.

Treatment methods in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are foundational to their theoretical, methodological, formulaic, and pharmacological systems, significantly contributing to syndrome differentiation and therapy. The principle of "promoting urination to regulate bowel movements" is a common therapeutic approach in TCM. The core concept is "promoting the dispersion and drainage of water dampness, regulating urination to relieve diarrhea," yet its scientific underpinning remains unclear.
