Membranes with various pore size, length, morphology and density have been synthesized from diverse materials for size-exclusion-based separation. An example is the sterilization of intravenous lines by exclusion of bacteria and viruses using polyvinylidene fluoride membranes with 0.1-microm-diameter pores. Chemically specific filtration has recently been addressed for small molecules. Nevertheless, specific bio-organism immobilization and detection remains a great technical challenge in many biomedical applications, such as decontamination or analysis of air and liquids such as drinking water and body fluids. To achieve this goal, materials with controlled pore diameter, length and surface chemistry are required. In this letter, we present the first functionalized silicon membranes and demonstrate their ability to selectively capture simulated bio-organisms. These extremely versatile and rigid devices open the door to a new class of materials that are able to recognize the external fingerprints of bio-organisms-such as size and outer membrane proteins-for specific capture and detection applications.

We propose and demonstrate a data-driven plasmonic metascreen that efficiently absorbs incident light over a wide spectral range in an ultra-thin silicon film. By embedding a double-nanoring silver array within a 20 nm ultrathin amorphous silicon (a-Si) layer, we achieve a significant enhancement of light absorption. This enhancement arises from the interaction between the resonant cavity modes and localized plasmonic modes, requiring precise tuning of plasmon resonances to match the absorption region of the silicon active layer.

Machine learning accelerated nonadiabatic dynamics simulations of materials with excitonic effects.

This study presents an efficient methodology for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics of complex materials with excitonic effects by integrating machine learning (ML) models with simplified Tamm-Dancoff approximation (sTDA) calculations. By leveraging ML models, we accurately predict ground-state wavefunctions using unconverged Kohn-Sham (KS) Hamiltonians. These ML-predicted KS Hamiltonians are then employed for sTDA-based excited-state calculations (sTDA/ML).

Background: Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and tumour-derived extracellular vesicles (tdEVs) have great potential for monitoring therapy response and early detection of tumour relapse, facilitating personalized adjuvant therapeutic strategies. However, their low abundance in peripheral blood limits their informative value. In this study, we explored the presence of CTCs and tdEVs collected intraoperatively from a tumour-draining vein (DV) and via a central venous catheter (CVC) prior to tumour resection.

Self-assembled gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) possess distinctive properties that are highly desirable in diverse nanotechnological applications. This study meticulously explores the size-dependent behavior of Au-NPs under an electric field, specifically focusing on sizes ranging from 5 to 40 nm, and their subsequent assembly into 2D monolayers on an n-type silicon substrate. The primary objective is to refine the assembly process and augment the functional characteristics of the resultant nanostructures.
