Monodisperse and high-surface-area mesoporous inorganic spheres of various compositions including metal oxides, mixed oxides, and metal phosphates are prepared by templating mesoporous carbon spheres which are replicated from spherical mesoporous silica. Due to the rigid and thermally stable framework of carbon template, the crystalline phases of the obtained metal oxide spheres can be readily tailored by controlling crystalline temperatures. Moreover, the sphere morphologies can be changed from solid structure to hollow structure in some cases by changing the polarity of the precursor, due to the hydrophobic nature of carbon template.

Mine tailing deposits pose a global problem, as they may contain metal contaminants in various geochemical forms and are likely to be leached from the surface into the underlying groundwater, which can result in health and/or environmental risks. Unfortunately, little is currently known regarding the water flow and mass balance related to leaching in the vadose zone as these factors are still difficult to measure at the field scale. A pilot-scale experiment was run in a 1 m instrumented column for 6 months to address this issue.

Pre-designed core-shell metal-organic frameworks (MOFs@MOFs) with customized functionalities can enhance the material properties compared to conventional single MOFs. The porous carbon composites derived from MOFs@MOFs also have excellent functionality due to the presence of multiple metal/metal oxide nanoparticles. This paper synthesized a novel MOFs@MOFs composite (MIL-101(Fe)@Ni-MOF) with a core-shell structure with MIL-101(Fe) as the core and Ni-MOF as the shell.

As a promising tumor treatment, chemodynamic therapy (CDT) can specifically catalyze HO into the cytotoxic hydroxyl radical (·OH) via Fenton/Fenton-like reaction. However, the limited HO and weakly acidic pH in tumor microenvironment (TME) would severely restrict the therapeutic efficiency of CDT. Here, a weakly acid activated, HO self-supplied, hyaluronic acid (HA)-functionalized Ce/Cu bimetallic nanoreactor (CBPNs@HA) is elaborately designed for complementary chemodynamic-immunotherapy.

Using sewage sludge compost (SSC) for abandoned mine land reclamation supports ecological sustainability, but the environmental behavior of heavy metals in this process lacks systematic field validation. Here we analyzed the dynamic changes in heavy metal composition in topsoil, surface runoff, and subsurface infiltration after large-scale reclamation. Results show that SSC application promoted plant growth by 2-4 times, enhanced the physicochemical structure of the topsoil, and increased the levels of organic matter and inorganic nutrients.

Polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics (MPs) and lead (Pb) co-contamination, an emerging co-contamination, may profoundly impact plant growth. We aimed to evaluate the effects of PLA-MPs and Pb on buckwheat growth and physiology and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms through an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic approach. PLA-MPs alone reduced buckwheat biomass by 26.
